Emmy felt like she was intruding. She quickly glanced away, rebooted her laptop, and got back to work. She opened her document and started on her feedback report. A few minutes later, Isabel took off her VR headset, eyes rimmed with red like she’d just escaped some powerful storm of emotion. She stared at her screen for a moment, then noticed Emmy already lost in work. Isabel took a deep breath, shook herself free from the memory, and started typing up her own report.

For a while, the only sounds in the room were the quick taps of their keyboards. Now and then, they’d whisper about a bug or a glitch, their teamwork so seamless it almost felt peaceful.

Emmy finished first. She grabbed her phone and scrolled quietly, waiting for Isabel to catch up. About fifteen minutes later, Isabel typed her last sentence. They printed their reports, stacked them together, and headed to the office.

Emmy trailed behind Isabel as they walked in. James was at his desk, looking every bit as cool and distant as usual. At the sound of footsteps, he glanced up, then slowly closed the file he was reading.

Isabel stepped forward and handed over her report. “James, here’s my feedback.”
