James stood tall in the doorway, his presence heavy with tension that seemed to suck the air out of the room.
His dark eyes locked on Emmy, sharp enough to make her feel like he could see right through her.
Whatever anger Emmy had felt fizzled out halfway under that stare, leaving her with nothing but a weird, uneasy guilt.
But she wasn’t in the wrong. She was just stating a perfectly normal boundary.
Trying to sound braver than she felt, she said, “We should both respect each other’s privacy, right?”
James let out a sarcastic little laugh. “Privacy? Or are you just scared I’ll catch you still tangled up with Dean?”
Emmy’s eyes flew open in shock. She hadn’t seen that coming at all.
Hurt and anger crashed over her all at once, drowning out any last bit of patience.
Without a word, she shoved past James, grabbed her toiletries, and stormed into the next room over.
This time, she was the one to slam the door.
James just stood there, frozen in place.
He didn’t even know why he’d said what he did. If anything, he just felt even more frustrated with himself.
After a minute, he splashed cold water on his face, threw on some fresh clothes, and left the room too.
When Emmy stepped out of the bathroom in the other room, she saw Teresa sitting up in bed, looking at her with confusion.
“Emmy, what are you doing in here? Where’s James?”
Emmy kept her voice steady. “I’m moving out of the other room. I’ll bring my things over later.”
It wasn’t just about being mad. That room shared a wall with Evelina and her friends, and Emmy never slept well with them so close.
Teresa looked like she wanted to ask more, but just then the doctor came in for rounds.
Emmy jumped at the chance. “Doctor, how’s my mom doing? Is she ready to go home and rest?”
The doctor checked over Teresa, then nodded.
“She’s recovering well. She can rest at home now, but you’ll need Dr. Hall to sign off—she’s the attending physician.”
Emmy pressed her lips together.
Dr. Hall hadn’t shown up in days. Ever since their argument about James, she’d been avoiding Emmy. Anything Emmy needed, she had to ask someone else.
Left with no choice, Emmy made her way to Lorelei’s office and knocked.
Lorelei was writing something when she looked up, her face icing over the second she saw Emmy.
