Emmy was still caught up thinking about Cooper, so she didn’t catch Abriella’s sudden change of subject. She looked up, a little lost.
“What big battle?”
Abriella clapped her hands together, giving Emmy a look full of exaggerated frustration and a mischievous glint in her eyes.
“Oh come on! Don’t play innocent with me. Did you guys use protection or not?”
Emmy’s cheeks turned scarlet, heat rushing all the way up to her ears. She quickly reached out to shove Abriella’s face away before she could lean in any closer.
“I forgot!”
Abriella raised her eyebrows, clearly not buying it. Her mouth twisted into a smirk.
“You forgot? You’re seriously telling me that’s something you could forget? Isn’t that supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime kind of memory?”
She gave Emmy a look up and down, clicking her tongue in fake admiration. “Honestly, with my cousin’s stamina—he’s like a human bulldozer. I’m kind of amazed you survived the night, little as you are.”
Emmy shoveled the last bites of noodles into her mouth and grabbed her bowl, clearly set on escaping to the kitchen. But when she stood up, she moved too fast and wobbled, nearly losing her balance.
“Hey, slow down!” Abriella caught her with one arm and took the bowl with the other. “I’ll clean up. You just threw up, remember? Go lie down for a while.”
By the time Abriella finished in the kitchen and came back out, Emmy was already curled up on the couch, sound asleep. Abriella just smiled, shook her head, and quietly grabbed a blanket from the bedroom, tucking it gently around Emmy.
The next morning, Emmy woke up to the soft sound of pages being flipped. Abriella was sitting cross-legged on the rug, surrounded by case files, totally focused. When she noticed Emmy stirring, she looked up with a bright smile.
“Morning! I’m off work today. Go grab some breakfast first. Once I finish these files, I’ll take you for a little tour upstairs.”
Emmy was still a bit foggy, her head pounding from the hangover. She massaged her temples.
