When Emmy woke up the next morning, the spot beside her was already empty.
There was a sticky note on her phone, the handwriting wild and untamed—almost like it was alive with energy.
Breakfast’s in the pot. Eat before you get caught up in work.
I’ve got to head to the base today, so I might not be reachable. If you need anything, ask Will.
Something inside her softened. She peeled the note away and carefully tucked it into her nightstand drawer.
Throwing back the covers, she set her bare feet on the floor. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed the trash can by the bed was spotless.
Her cheeks warmed instantly.
Last night had gotten a little crazy again.
She’d been so tired that after just one round, she’d fallen asleep while James was out getting water. And somehow, he’d still cleaned up everything for her.
Wild in bed, meticulous outside of it. That was James.
Maybe it was just the right amount of closeness, or maybe it was just him, but her cheeks stayed rosy and she felt more alive than she had in a long time.
She sat down at her computer, fingers flying across the keyboard, coding faster than ever.
For the next few days, Emmy went full-on prep mode. Her whole world shrank down to two things: writing code and cramming for exams.
The AI competition was coming up at the start of December, and her grad school exams were at the end of the month. There wasn’t a second to waste—she was squeezing every minute dry.
At night, lying in bed, her head was full of data streams and algorithm models, or she was busy planning how much further she could push her project the next day.
More than once, James came out of the shower hoping for a little alone time, only to see her glued to her laptop with a serious look, or already fast asleep at her desk. All he could do was sigh, a little helpless, a little amused, and gently carry her back to bed.
Meanwhile, the project she’d almost forgotten—Letter from the Other Side—finally launched at noon on October 23.
