The whole place was buzzing, but then, out of nowhere, the crowd a little ways off went silent.

A wave of whispers followed.

Someone, voice barely above a whisper and full of shock, asked, “Wait, is that Mr. Nelson? What’s he doing here?”

Just like that, Emmy’s side of the room went quiet too.

Everyone turned to look at the entrance.

There he was. Mr. Nelson, hands in his pockets, walked in with that calm, unhurried confidence that made it seem like he owned the place. He was in a sharp black suit, gold-rimmed glasses catching the light, his dark eyes cool and unreadable. His handsome face wore that signature, frosty expression that basically screamed “keep your distance.”

His gaze swept the room, pausing when he found Emmy.

And then, with those long strides, he headed straight toward her.

Everyone crowding around Emmy looked like they might pass out, scrambling to get out of his way and leaving a clear path.

James stopped right in front of her. He looked down at her, and—shockingly—his lips curved into the faintest hint of a smile.

“Thanks for earlier,” he said.

For just a second, Emmy was thrown off by that smile.

The wild, impossible thought she’d worked so hard to squash came rushing back.

She dug her nails into her palm, snapping herself out of it.

No way. Not possible.

Sure, they looked similar—same height, same face—but everything else was different. Their vibe. Their voices. Their whole presence.

James’s voice was deep and a little rough, like gravel.

Mr. Nelson’s voice was cool and clear, every word sharp and commanding.

How could one man have two totally different voices?

Besides, knowing James, if he really was Mr. Nelson, there’s no way he would have kept it from her.

Thinking that, Emmy forced herself to stay calm. She gave a polite, distant nod.

“You’ve helped me before, Mr. Nelson. I’m just returning the favor.”

James raised an eyebrow, those dark eyes studying her for a couple of seconds.
