The lights at the club’s entrance were bright, casting a glow that made his eyes—hidden behind those gold-rimmed glasses—look impossibly deep, as if you could fall right in. In the next moment, he suddenly let go of her hand.
“It’s cold out. Don’t freeze just to look good,” his voice was cool, steady as always. “Go home.”
Emmy’s heart was still pounding. She instinctively stepped back, putting a little space between them.
The Bentley had already pulled up under the archway, the bodyguard silently opening the door for her. The wind picked up, whipping the oversized suit jacket around her.
She quickly grabbed the jacket tighter and spoke quietly. “Thank you, Mr. Nelson. I’ll get you a new one.”
She still remembered last time—she’d gotten his suit dirty, sent it to be cleaned, then returned it, only for his assistant to throw it out on his orders.
But this time, his voice came from above, low and calm. “No need. Just have it cleaned and bring it back.”
Emmy looked up, surprised.
He held her gaze for a moment and added, “And don’t have anyone else do it for you this time.”
She froze.
So… last time, he’d had his assistant toss the suit not because she messed it up, but because Mandy touched it? That strange realization made her heart do a weird little flip.
She quickly bowed her head. “Thank you, Mr. Nelson. I’ll be going now.”
Then she pretty much dove into the car, like she was escaping.
As the car pulled away, Emmy couldn’t help glancing in the rearview mirror. He was still standing there under the lights—tall, straight, and somehow even more distant in the cold night.
Why did he feel so painfully familiar? Was she losing her mind? How could she keep mixing up two completely different men?
She looked away, took off the jacket, folded it neatly, and handed it to the bodyguard in the passenger seat. “Please take this to the best dry cleaner.”
