Dean’s brow was drawn tight. He’d always believed everything Evelina told him. For years, he’d convinced himself that Emmy was just making excuses to protect her mother. But now, that certainty—the fortress he’d built—had finally started to crack. Emmy’s words had gotten to him, in a way he couldn’t ignore.
Even when he thought he was in control, when he brought in the so-called psychic and believed he could manipulate everything, Emmy turned the tables without even breaking a sweat. Suddenly, what she said hit differently. The seed of doubt had been planted, and it was spreading fast.
Dean spun around, his face dark and stormy as he strode down the hallway toward Evelina’s hospital room. He pushed open the door. Evelina was sitting up in bed, scrolling through her phone. The second she saw him, her eyes brightened. “Dean, you finally came to see me again?”
He hadn’t come for her. Not really. He’d bribed a nurse at the front desk to let him know as soon as Emmy set foot in the hospital. He was here to intercept Emmy, nothing more.
Still, Dean gave a noncommittal grunt and closed the door behind him. He walked over to the bed, his gaze heavy and searching as he looked at her gentle, innocent face. Then, out of nowhere, he asked, “Eve, can you tell me again what happened the day of my mom’s car accident?”
Evelina’s smile faltered for a second. She blinked, confused and anxious. “Dean, why are you asking about that all of a sudden?”
But she caught herself quickly. Maybe this was her chance to win him back. She didn’t hesitate. Tears welled up in her eyes.
“That day... I was actually on my way to see you, but I ran into Sally outside the coffee shop,” she said, her voice trembling just enough. “I’d just gotten back from overseas, and I brought her that gold-infused skincare set she’d been wanting. I thought I’d catch up and give it to her.”
“When we hit that tree-lined road going back to the house, I saw it—a car came flying straight at us, like the driver had lost their mind.”
“Your mom tried to swerve, but the car spun out and crashed into a tree.” Evelina paused, swallowing hard. “That other car sped away, then suddenly turned around and slammed straight into the back of your mom’s car. The driver’s side was completely crushed...”
Her voice broke, and it really sounded like she was back in that moment. “Then the car stopped, and two people got out. It was Teresa—and Mr. Aldridge.”
“I was terrified. I acted like I was just passing by, but then I looped around and hid behind a tree near the crash.”
“I heard Teresa tell Mr. Aldridge that Sally loved to gossip, that she’d probably spill about their affair to anyone who’d listen. Only a dead woman keeps secrets.”
“Mr. Aldridge checked the car and said she was barely breathing, and that the road’s security cameras were already taken care of. No one would ever know it was them.”
