The old lady turned to follow his gaze, and the instant she spotted Emmy, her whole face lit up with a beaming, crinkly smile.
“Oh, Emmy!” she called out, reaching for her with open arms. “When did you get here? Come over and let Grandma take a look at you. Have you gotten skinnier again?”
Emmy smiled and slipped her hand into the warmth of the old woman’s palm.
“Grandma, I haven’t lost any weight. If anything, I’ve been eating too much and gained a little.”
“Really?” The old lady studied her up and down and nodded, pleased. “You do look a bit fuller. Your cheeks are rounder—makes you even prettier!”
The room felt cozy and bright, but then Tyler’s voice cut in.
“Ms. Lincoln, you were looking all around when you walked in. Who are you hoping to find?”
Emmy’s heart skipped. She felt a little awkward and just answered honestly, “It’s nothing. I thought I heard a familiar voice when I was outside the door. Maybe I was just imagining things.”
Tyler’s mouth twitched, and he sighed quietly to himself.
Familiar? Of course it was familiar.
James came from a unit that was basically a boot camp for the extraordinary. For guys like him, changing his voice or copying someone else’s was like breathing.
To keep “Jamie” alive in everyone’s eyes, he didn’t just copy the look and habits—he even nailed the voice, every nuance.
He could flip from James to Jamie in a blink, whenever he needed.
Six years and counting, never slipping once.
It was obsessive, maybe even a little crazy.
But that craziness was exactly what fooled all the corporate sharks circling Nelson Corporation.
No one ever suspected that the real Jamie had died over ten years ago.
Thinking about it, Tyler’s face slipped back into its usual calm and warmth.
“You must’ve heard wrong,” he said lightly. “It’s just me and Grandma here.”
The old lady, meanwhile, was too excited to care about their conversation. She tugged Emmy’s hand, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
“Emmy, let me show you something cool!”
“My oldest grandson found this for me—it’s so much fun. Here, try it on!”
