A long mahogany desk ran the length of the room, and on top of it sat four identical high-end laptops, their screens glowing in the soft light.

Dominic stood behind them, hands clasped at his back, looking like some strict professor about to put his students to the test. He cleared his throat and nodded toward the computers.

“I’ve loaded each of these with a new Trojan virus I developed myself. Nothing too tricky,” he said, a sly smile tugging at his lips.

He paused, then turned to the bookshelf behind him and carefully slid out a thick book, wrapped in brown kraft paper.

“Whoever solves it first gets my Digital Codex.”

The second the words left Dominic’s mouth, all four people in the room lit up. This was the legendary book Dominic had written by hand—never published, never shared. In the cybersecurity world, it was basically the holy grail. Usually, they couldn’t even lay a finger on it. Dominic guarded it like it was made of solid gold.

Now he was actually offering it up as a prize.

Jules was the first to react, face scrunched up in protest. “Come on, Professor, you know viruses aren’t my thing. This is Krystina’s specialty! How is this fair?”

Nico jumped in, just as indignant. “Right? You’re totally favoring her. Not cool, Professor!”

Krystina just smirked, her confidence practically radiating off her. She shot her two senior brothers a look, her voice full of swagger.

“Don’t blame the Professor for being fair. If you can’t keep up, that’s on you,” she said, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. She didn’t even glance at Emmy—in Krystina’s eyes, Emmy didn’t even count as competition.

Dominic stroked his white beard, his eyes twinkling with mischief.

“Enough talk. You get one hour,” he said.

He flipped over an hourglass and set it on the desk. The sand started to slip through, and the room suddenly felt charged.
