“Emmy, wait up! I’ll go with you!” Abriella called, hurrying after her.
By the time Emmy got to the hospital, she spotted Claudia leaning against the balcony doors at the end of the hallway. Claudia had a long, slim cigarette between her fingers, her emerald dress hugging her curves in a way that made it impossible not to notice her. When Emmy rushed past, worry written all over her face, Claudia’s lips curved into a satisfied little smile, her eyes glinting with approval.
Claudia didn’t rush. She turned, stubbed out her cigarette on the trash can, and then strolled calmly toward the patient rooms.
Inside, Teresa was awake but looked completely lost. Ivy stood at the bedside, wiping away tears again and again.
“Mom!” Emmy rushed over, about to speak, when Lorelei appeared in her white coat and suddenly grabbed her arm.
“Let’s talk in my office.”
Emmy blurted, “What’s wrong with my mom?”
Teresa tried to say something, her lips moving, but Lorelei cut her off, her voice sharp. “Come with me to the office. Or do you want me to say it in front of the patient?”
Something in Lorelei’s tone sent a chill through Emmy. She took a deep breath to steady herself and turned to Abriella. “Can you stay with my mom? I’ll be right back.”
“Of course,” Abriella said, quickly moving to sit by Teresa.
As Emmy left, she noticed Claudia following at just the right distance—not too close, not too far. If Claudia wanted a show, Emmy would give her one.
She lifted her hand, pretending to wipe away tears, though her eyes were dry.
Lorelei glanced back and raised an eyebrow. “You can cry all you want, but it won’t change anything.”
Emmy kept her head down and followed Lorelei into the office.
As soon as the door closed, Claudia slipped back into Teresa’s room. She took out her Bluetooth earpiece, put it in, and tapped her phone. Claudia had planned ahead—there was already a bug hidden in the office in case Lorelei tried anything funny.
Evelina sidled up, barely containing her excitement. “Mom, did Dr. Hall fall for it? Can I listen?”
Claudia shot her a look but handed her the other earbud.
