After the last of the board members left, Cloudridge Estate fell quiet again, almost too quiet.
The dinner table still looked perfect, but barely any of the food had been touched.
Emmy scooped herself a little rice and some plain broccoli, and ate in silence. She tried to focus on the food, but before she knew it, her eyes started to burn. She put down her fork and wiped at her eyes, but suddenly the tears just kept coming, spilling down her cheeks no matter how hard she tried to stop.
She didn’t want to cry. She really didn’t.
But every time she thought about her grandfather—how much he’d suffered in that hospital bed, all because someone planned it that way—she just couldn’t hold it together. And the thought of the upcoming trial, of showing her mom that video evidence, and watching her break down… it felt like a rock sitting on her chest, so heavy she could barely breathe.
By the time Emmy left Cloudridge, night had completely settled in. She carried the leftovers back to her apartment.
She didn’t even go to the hospital. She was scared that if she saw her mom now, she’d just fall apart and start sobbing all over again.
At the same time, James was bringing Ollie home from the hospital. When he opened the apartment door, it was quiet.
Emmy had already showered and was fast asleep in bed.
James checked the clock. It wasn’t even nine yet. Usually at this hour, Emmy would be in the study working on her laptop or stretched out in the living room with a book.
Why was she asleep so early?
He walked over quietly and laid his palm on her forehead. Her temperature was normal.
He let out a breath, then looked at her face. Her skin was so fair it almost glowed, her lashes long and curled, casting a tiny shadow below her eyes. Her lips were full and pink, always looking soft and just a little bit glossy—enough to make anyone want to steal a kiss.
James swallowed and leaned down, pressing his lips to hers.
Emmy’s lashes fluttered, and she blinked open, still half asleep. Her voice was soft and tired. “I’m so tired. Can we not tonight?”
James couldn’t help but laugh to himself. What was going on in that head of hers? Did she think he only kissed her when he wanted something?
