Inside the drawer, a few pairs of his old underwear sat neatly folded. Same boring style, either black or gray—nothing else.

The cozy feeling that had just filled his chest evaporated in a heartbeat, swept away by a wave of disappointment he couldn’t quite explain. His heart felt heavy.

She’d bought him everything—new shirts, warm clothes for the cold weather, even thermal tops. She’d thought of everything.

Except underwear.

James sat on the edge of the bed, pajamas in hand, just staring at the drawer for what felt like forever. The comfort from seeing all those new clothes had vanished, replaced by a frustrated, bottled-up ache.

When he was done, he calmly folded the shredded pieces and stacked them neatly back in the drawer, just like before.

Only then did James close the wardrobe, feeling oddly satisfied. He crawled back into bed, wrapped Emmy up in his arms, and finally slept soundly.
