When they walked out of the cemetery, Teresa’s eyes were puffy and red. She looked completely drained, like she had nothing left to give.

Emmy couldn’t just leave her like that, so she took Teresa back to the hospital, made sure she was settled in, and only then did she let herself leave. She was planning to head straight to the police station to ask about what was happening with Claudia. After all, Claudia was just as responsible for her grandfather’s death as anyone else.

Emmy was just about to get in her car when James’s phone started ringing. He answered, spoke quietly for a few moments, and his face got serious fast. When he hung up, he looked over at Emmy, apologetic.

“Something’s come up at the station. I need to get back right away.”

Emmy nodded. “Just be careful, okay.”

He turned to go, but Emmy stopped him. “James.”

He glanced back, his dark eyes even deeper under the cloudy sky.

“Can you… find out what the police are doing with Claudia? Like, how they’re handling her?”

Emmy knew Claudia had been on the police’s radar for ages, and most of the details were probably top secret. If she asked as a regular person, she’d get nowhere. But James was different. His job meant he might be able to get some inside info.

James nodded, voice low. “I’ll see what I can find out. You’ve had a rough day. Go home and get some sleep.”

With that, he strode off, disappearing down the street.

He hadn’t been gone long when Emmy’s phone buzzed with a message from Abriella.

We won big in court today! Aren’t you going to celebrate?

Emmy’s eyes widened—she’d totally forgotten to thank Steve. She called Abriella right away.

“Ask your boss what he wants for dinner. I’m buying tonight.”
