Emmy’s brows knit even tighter, her tone turning icy. “I’ve never dragged him down. If you’re going to accuse me, you’d better have proof.”
“Oh, really?” Lorelei’s smirk only deepened. “If it hadn’t been for your darling father skipping town, would our entire plan have fallen apart?”
“We had everything lined up perfectly. Now, thanks to you, we’re wasting time and resources trying to pick up the pieces.”
“You think your mom finally gets to leave the hospital? Do you know how many people had to put everything on the line for that to happen?”
Her gaze was sharp as a knife, her presence chilling.
“James didn’t come home last night, did he? Do you even realize how much he’s carrying right now?”
“And you? All you know how to do is cling to him, try to get his attention. What else are you good for? You can’t do anything for him.”
Emmy’s hands clenched at her sides, nails digging into her palms. But her expression stayed calm, almost serene—she even let out a quiet, amused laugh.
“Dr. Hall, I think you’re missing something.”
“My mom being stuck in the hospital was part of your plan from the very beginning. You used her as leverage, hoping to keep Claudia in line.”
Lorelei’s eyes narrowed, just barely.
“I was willing to cooperate as a citizen. But that doesn’t mean you get to guilt-trip me or blame all this on me.”
“Plans never go exactly how you want. Didn’t you ever think something might go wrong? If your strategy falls apart at the first hiccup and you need to blame someone who’s just trying to help, maybe your plan wasn’t that solid to begin with.”
She paused, a hint of a smirk on her lips.
“I respect you—as a doctor, and as a soldier. But if you don’t like me, that’s your problem. You don’t get to hang made-up accusations on me.”
Emmy didn’t look back. She just turned and walked out.
Lorelei stared at the empty doorway, stunned.
After a long moment, she let out a laugh—half bitter, half relieved.
Maybe she finally understood why James was drawn to someone like Emmy.
She looked soft, like she’d break under the slightest pressure, but inside she was steel—sharp, resilient, impossible to shake.
Emmy was clear-headed, strong. Nothing seemed to keep her down.
