Emmy was barely awake, her voice muffled and drowsy. “My period’s never on schedule.”
James’s eyes narrowed in an instant. He started piecing things together in his head—the way she’d been so tired lately, how she’d doze off at odd hours, the times she’d looked a little green around the edges. The more he thought about it, the more it clicked, and his heart started pounding with a wild hope.
“Wait—could you be—”
Before he could even get the words out, Emmy, who’d looked half-asleep a second ago, suddenly flipped over and clamped both hands over his mouth.
“Don’t even think about it. There’s no way.” Her tone was final.
She always made sure they were careful. She watched him every single time, double-checking everything. There was no way they’d have an accident.
But even as she told herself that, a hint of fear crept in. What if…
James pried her hands away, his eyes betraying a flicker of hope. “But what if, just maybe—”
“There’s no what if!” Emmy snapped, her voice sharp.
James’s expression darkened, frustration swirling in his chest.
“So, you really don’t want to have my baby?”
Emmy pressed her lips together and turned away, silent.
Her mind was a mess—thoughts tangling up, old wounds aching. The past still haunted her. For seven years she’d counted days, hoping every month only to be let down again and again. In the end, the only thing she got was a lie big enough to crush her.
She was scared. Terrified that history would repeat itself.
James looked at her tense back and felt a rush of helplessness and worry. He reached for her, wanting to pull her close.
But Emmy spoke first, her voice low and tight. “It’s not that I don’t want your child.”
“I just… need a little time. To get used to the idea.”
James wrapped his arms around her from behind, holding her close, his hand resting over hers on her stomach.
“Okay,” he whispered, lips brushing her ear. “Whenever you’re ready, we’ll try. Only when you want to.”
Emmy didn’t say anything else.
Her body was exhausted, but her mind raced, worries growing wild in her chest. She lay awake, eyes wide open, listening to James’s steady breathing until finally, somewhere in the middle of the night, she drifted off at last.
