Dean didn’t make it back to his office for a long time. When he finally did, every step felt heavy, like he was dragging the whole world behind him. He went straight for his desk, reached into the deepest part of the bottom drawer, and pulled out a photo frame.
In the picture, he and Emmy were snuggled close together. She was laughing, soft and sweet, a dimple showing on her cheek, her eyes shining like they held a thousand stars. Carefree. Happy.
Now? She was distant. Cold. Like he was nothing more than a stranger.
And he knew—he was the one who’d made it this way.
His heart ached. It hurt so badly he could barely breathe.
Carefully, Dean slid the photo out of its frame and pressed it to his chest, right over his heart. If only… If only he could go back and do it all over again. He would treat Emmy like the most precious princess in the world, no question.
His hands shook as he picked up a pair of scissors. He cut out just her image from the photo, tucked it into a hidden slot in his wallet, and gripped it tight.
He whispered to himself, barely loud enough to hear.
“Babe… we’re going to be okay again. We have to be.”
“We’re married, right…?”
.
At Applewood Estate, Emmy still hadn’t managed to buy a pregnancy test.
Abriella and Steve were with her, cracking jokes as they walked back home. The two of them hauled a big box out of the car trunk, working together with practiced ease.
Abriella’s face lit up with a mischievous smile. “Ta-da! Housewarming present! Come see if you like it!”
Steve didn’t wait—he grabbed a box cutter and sliced the tape open. Inside was a gorgeous, cream-colored Segway, sleek and perfect.
Emmy’s face practically glowed.
“I was just thinking about getting one! It’s beautiful! I love it!”
Abriella got it out, adjusted the height, and gave Emmy a gentle shove. “Go on, try it out!”
Emmy was a pro. She hopped on without hesitation, gliding around the courtyard like she’d been born to ride.
“This is amazing!” she called out, grinning.
“Let’s go upstairs and play!” Emmy waved them on.
Steve dug out another gift from the trunk, a fancy-looking box, and handed it over. “I had no idea what you’d want, but Abriella said you’re always coding, so I got you a keyboard set.”
