Kidnapping.
Twins.
Those two words were all it took to shatter every ounce of James’s calm.
A tidal wave of fear and fury hit her so hard her hand, the one that was always steady no matter what, started shaking uncontrollably.
The black SUV that had barely pulled away from the military base screeched to a halt, whipped around, and roared back the way it came, pedal slammed down.
Meanwhile, at the hospital—
Four bodyguards and Dean tore out after the garbage truck, but it was already gone, not even a taillight in sight.
They split up to search and finally found an abandoned dumpster shoved into a corner of the parking lot.
The lid was hanging wide open. Inside, there was nothing except a cell phone. One of the bodyguards snatched it up.
“It’s Ms. Lincoln’s phone!”
“Oh no, she really has been kidnapped! Quick, call James!”
“Check the security cameras! Lock down every exit!”
But Dean spun around, eyes blazing red, and sprinted straight back into the hospital, heading for the treatment room.
Evelina.
Damn it.
An hour earlier, he’d followed Emmy’s car to the hospital, keeping his distance. There were bodyguards with her, and Abriella too—he knew there was no way he’d get close. But he just wanted to see her, even if it was only from a distance. Even a glimpse made the pain in his chest a little more bearable.
He was sitting in the driver’s seat, smoking, when another car pulled in next to him.
Evelina got out.
She started walking toward the hospital, phone pressed to her ear. Her voice was soft, but it carried through his half-open window.
“I’m here for a dressing change.”
“Relax. They’re with me. Just get rid of her friend when the time comes.”
She hung up.
Dean’s gut twisted. Something was wrong.
He jumped out of his car, grabbed Evelina’s wrist, and snapped,
“You’re planning something against Emmy again, aren’t you?”
“Did you forget my warning?”
Evelina flinched, and when she saw it was him, her face drained of color.
“Dean? What are you doing here?”
She tried to pull away, eyes darting everywhere, but she still put on that innocent act.
