Every nerve in the special ops team was stretched tight. All eyes snapped to their captain, waiting for his signal.
James’s gaze was locked on Pearl, eyes dark and stormy, watching for even the tiniest slip—a single flicker of hesitation.
But then Dean, eyes wild and bloodshot, suddenly snapped. He lunged at Pearl like a man with nothing left to lose. “If you’re going down, I’m going with you! Let’s do this all over again!”
Pearl, seeing Dean charge, lost it. “You’re insane! All of you are fucking insane!” he shouted, voice cracking with panic.
Right then, the boat roared closer to the shore, its engine echoing across the water.
Pearl didn’t wait another second. He yanked Emmy behind him, dragging her backward toward the boat.
But just as they reached the edge, Emmy moved. In one quick motion, she pulled a knife from her jacket and drove it straight at Pearl’s side, every muscle in her body fueled by sheer desperation.
She couldn’t let this monster escape because of her. She’d rather die than let that happen.
For a heartbeat, James’s heart stopped.
Pearl’s eyes went wide. He never imagined this fragile-looking woman would have a blade—or the guts to use it.
He tried to twist away, but in that split second, James acted. His movements were a blur. He raised his gun and fired—crack—hitting Pearl right through the wrist, making him drop his weapon.
James was so fast that Will, watching through his sniper scope, barely had time to react. Only when he saw another man on the boat try to draw a gun did Will fire, dropping him instantly.
Pearl fell to the ground, howling in pain, blood pouring from his shattered wrist.
Emmy, suddenly free, lost her balance and tumbled into the river.
“Emmy!” Dean tried to grab her, but his feet slipped, and he crashed into the water after her.
The special ops team stormed in, pinning Pearl face-down in the dirt before he could even think about fighting back.
James, the moment his shot rang out, sprinted for the riverbank like a wild animal.
One of the team reached down and yanked Dean out of the water as he struggled to swim after Emmy. “Mr. Sparrow, let me get you out first!”
