The first light of dawn sliced through the heavy darkness hanging over the South American jungle. Flames raged in two villages, painting half the sky a deep, bloody red. The air was thick with the stench of gunpowder and blood, the ugly proof that this wild, nerve-wracking anti-cartel raid was finally over.
The chief of staff let out a shaky breath, his eyes burning as he looked over the battered land. He strode over to the man standing tall in the faint morning light, his voice trembling with something between awe and pure relief.
“Dragon King, I honestly have no idea how to thank you for what you’ve done for the border.”
James didn’t look back. His eyes stayed locked on the distant, leaping flames, and all he gave in return was a low, dismissive grunt.
The chief didn’t mind his coldness. He pressed on, the adrenaline still rushing through every word. “Pearl is a real fox. That fake village looked harmless, but it was a damn fortress. Traps everywhere. We almost lost the whole squad in that deathtrap.”
He wiped the sweat and grime from his face, still shaken by how close they’d come to disaster. They’d been firing on the decoy, thinking they were drawing fire away from the Dragon Squad. But it was all a setup—one wrong move and they’d have been wiped out.
If the cartel’s real base hadn’t suddenly lit up with gunfire, pulling most of the enemy away, they’d all be dead. But that meant Dragon Squad, at the real stronghold, was facing danger ten times worse.
Even so, they’d managed to capture Pearl alive, save every hostage, and even pull the battered squad out of the trap. The chief couldn’t help but be in awe. The more he thought about it, the more he admired James.
“Dragon King, if it weren’t for Dragon Squad, there’s no way we’d have caught Pearl. We could’ve been out here ten more years and never found the cartel’s nest.”
James finally turned, his eyes dark and unreadable in the firelight. His voice came out low and rough. “Chief, I can’t take credit for catching the decoy. That was my wife. If she hadn’t risked everything to send those coordinates from the inside, there’s no way we could’ve pulled this off.”
The chief’s respect only grew. “Your wife is incredible. Braver than most men I know—”
James cut him off, his tone suddenly hard and final. “This never leaves us. Keep it absolutely secret.”
The chief’s excitement died in an instant. He straightened up, all business. “Understood. I get it.”
If word got out, the consequences would be disastrous. A civilian had hacked through a cartel’s digital defenses and sent out coordinates—something no one had ever pulled off before. If the news leaked, the Dragon King’s wife would instantly become a target for every crime syndicate in the world. And the cartels, once they realized their systems could be hacked, would spend whatever it took to build defenses no one could ever crack again. After that, any hope of breaking in would be gone forever.
