Emmy hadn’t slept that deeply in ages.
She didn’t stir until dusk settled in and the mouthwatering smell of food started to creep into the room, nudging her awake. Her eyelashes fluttered. Right away, a deep, warm voice sounded beside her.
“Awake? Eat something before you go back to sleep.”
A sense of comfort wrapped around her, so complete and new she almost didn’t recognize it. Slowly, she opened her eyes and turned toward the voice.
And just like that, she was stunned.
James was standing next to her in a sharp navy dress uniform, the brass on his shoulders gleaming. A belt hugged his waist, showing off his lean build, and his long legs filled out his uniform pants perfectly. On his feet were polished black boots. He looked like he belonged in a movie—calm, commanding, and just a little untouchable.
But his face—God, his face was something else. Strong jaw, dark brows, eyes so deep you could get lost in them. Every part of him screamed confidence and raw, wild energy. It shouldn’t have made sense, but somehow, he managed to look both noble and untamed at the same time.
Honestly, he was so handsome it was almost criminal.
Whatever sleepiness Emmy had left was obliterated. She couldn’t look away. Since when did James in uniform look this good? Why had she never noticed before?
She just sat there, staring, her mind completely blank.
James crossed the room in a few long strides and reached out, his warm hand pressing gently to her forehead.
“What’s wrong?” he asked, his brows pulled together with concern. “Does your throat still hurt?”
Snapping out of her trance, Emmy scrambled to sit up. James helped, propping her against the headboard.
“It’s much better,” she managed, her voice still scratchy. But her eyes were glued to him. “Why are you… in uniform?”
James looked down at himself. “Forgot to change.”
He caught her strange look and added, “Does it make you uncomfortable? I can go change right now.”
“No!” Emmy blurted, grabbing his arm before she could think. “It’s not that. I’ve just… never seen you in it before. It feels strange, in a good way.”
She hesitated, then blushed. “You look incredible.”
A faint smile played in James’s eyes as he messed up her hair, gentle and fond.
