The needle caught the light, a sharp glint that made Emmy squint on reflex. Her first instinct was to yank her hand back.

She’d always hated needles.

As the nurse got an alcohol swab ready, she started to explain, “This is just to help with—”

“Cough! Cough, cough, cough!”

Abriella suddenly exploded into a fit of coughing loud enough to shake the walls, completely drowning out whatever the nurse had been about to say.

Some things, Abriella thought, had to be left for Emmy’s cousin to share himself—gotta keep the surprise and a bit of drama. No way was she about to be the one who let the cat out of the bag.

The nurse froze, clearly realizing she’d almost spoiled something, then quickly switched gears. “Oh—I mean, this is just to help your body recover. You’re still weak, so you need to take it easy and rest up.”

Emmy shot Abriella a suspicious look, wondering what that over-the-top performance was about, but she didn’t say anything.

The nurse came closer, syringe in hand. Emmy instinctively balled her hand into a fist, not wanting to give it up. That thin, pointy needle made her skin crawl.

The nurse noticed and couldn’t help but laugh. “What’s wrong? Do you get this scared when your husband gives you shots too?”

Emmy froze, confused. “Wait—my husband gave me a shot yesterday?”

“Of course!” The nurse’s whole face lit up with excitement. “None of us could get near you. Every time we tried, you’d start shaking. In the end, the doctor just let your husband handle all your IVs.”

“You probably slept through the whole thing, but honestly, your husband is something else.”

She leaned in, like she was letting Emmy in on a secret.

“He’s the kind of guy who can handle a battlefield and still be the sweetest at home. The second he got back from deployment, he stuck by your side, helped you wash up, took care of your medicine—he even did most of what the doctors are supposed to do. And he still found time to cook you the most amazing soup.”
