No sooner had Emmy finished speaking than someone jumped in to stop her.
“Hey, Em! That’s military equipment! You can’t just take it apart!”
James shot a cold look in his direction. The guy immediately shut up, standing so straight he could’ve been at attention.
James turned to Emmy, his voice softening, his whole demeanor gentle and warm. “It’s okay. Go ahead, take it apart if you need to.”
“If anything goes wrong, I’ll handle it.”
Emmy felt a little awkward, but that last line—I’ll handle it—put her at ease.
Still, this was military tech. Not just anyone could mess around with it.
“I actually don’t need to take the whole thing apart,” she said, looking up at him seriously. “I just need a sensor module, enough to get my AI driver running.”
James didn’t hesitate for a second. He grabbed a military multitool from the toolbox, walked over to the drone, and knelt down. “Which part is the sensor?”
With a quick, practiced motion, he popped open the drone’s shell before she could answer. It was like he’d done this a thousand times.
Emmy just stared, completely stunned.
She snapped out of it, hurried over, and pointed at a tiny part hidden under a tangle of wires. “It’s right here.”
James glanced at it, then, with steady hands, snipped through the bindings, avoided the main circuits, and pulled out the sensor in one smooth motion.
He handed the part to Emmy, then turned to his two shell-shocked subordinates. “Send this wrecked drone to maintenance. Put it on my report. If anyone’s got questions, send them to me.”
“Yes, sir! James!” The two guys scrambled to haul the remains of the drone onto the helicopter.
A moment later, the rotors thundered and the helicopter lifted off, quickly disappearing into the evening sky.
It was getting late.
