Abriella froze on the spot, eyes darting away as guilt flickered across her face.

She nervously picked at her fingers, trying to figure out what to say, when the hospital room door swung open.

James walked in, now dressed in a black training uniform and carrying dinner.

From the hallway, Will called out, “Ms. Sullivan, you ready?”

Abriella leapt up right away. “Emmy, I promised Will I’d go check out Jade Street with him. Is there anything you want me to pick up?”

Emmy felt even more unsettled and frowned. “No, just don’t go too far. It’s not exactly safe here.”

Abriella grinned. “Don’t worry, Will’s got my back. I’ll be fine!”

With that, she slipped out of the room as quickly as possible, even remembering to shut the door behind her.

Emmy’s frown didn’t ease up, not even a little.

James set the food boxes on the table and started opening them, his movements practiced and calm.

He noticed Emmy’s mood right away and looked up, confused. “What’s wrong? Did today wear you out?”

Emmy stared at him, suddenly serious. “James, am I… am I pregnant?”

James froze, hands stilling mid-action.

A flash of guilt crossed his face and he avoided her eyes, pretending to focus on the food.

“Let’s eat first,” he said, trying to sound casual.

His obvious avoidance only made Emmy’s worry worse. Without even realizing it, she touched her flat stomach.

Was it really possible there was a new life inside her?

The thought sent her mind reeling.

James watched her out of the corner of his eye. She sat there, head down and brow furrowed, looking like she couldn’t process what was happening.

The doctor’s words echoed in his mind.

“Captain, your wife’s not even three months along. If she doesn’t want to keep it, she can still end the pregnancy. But after three months, the baby will be developed. Maybe once she sees the ultrasound, she’ll change her mind.”

James felt his heart clench.
