Ben’s easy laugh came through the phone. “Emmy, congratulations on winning the Starlight Cup! I’m so proud of you.”
“Thank you, Mr. Sparrow.” Emmy’s tone was neutral, giving nothing away.
“So, here’s the thing,” Ben shifted gears, “I was hoping to talk with you about Infinity. Do you have any free time to meet up?”
Emmy raised an eyebrow.
What a formal excuse.
She could tell with her eyes closed—he wasn’t really interested in Infinity. It was all about his stepdaughter.
“Sorry, Mr. Sparrow, I have grad school exams to prep for at the end of the month. My schedule’s packed, so I probably won’t be able to go out anytime soon.”
“Oh, it won’t take long,” Ben said, his voice a little rushed. “If you really can’t get out, I could come to your place. Infinity is blowing up internationally right now—even the President’s shown interest, told us to get to know it better. Since we’re close, I thought I’d ask you for a favor.”
He was making it clear he wouldn’t let this drop easily.
Emmy gave in a little. “How about this: I’ll call you back later, okay?”
“Alright, I’ll wait for your call.”
As soon as she hung up, Emmy’s brows drew tight, frustration knotting her expression.
Just then, the bathroom door opened.
James walked out, a towel wrapped low around his waist, skin still damp from the shower, water dripping from his short hair.
He came over and asked, “Who was on the phone?”
Emmy almost answered automatically, but the words caught on her lips. She remembered the things he’d hidden from her.
Why should she be open with him if he kept secrets from her?
She tilted her chin up, her voice teasing and a little defiant. “Not telling you.”
James’s brow creased, just as she’d expected.
Seeing his reaction, Emmy felt a surge of satisfaction.
