Escape from Mr. Whitman (Emma and Theodore) novel Chapter 400

“Of course I remember. How could I forget? Is he doing alright? Has he been behaving?”

Cecilia finally relaxed, a wave of relief washing over her. Thank goodness—Theo wasn’t suspicious at all.

Meanwhile, Theodore sat by the floor-to-ceiling windows of his hotel suite, setting his phone aside as he gazed out at the city below. His eyes were clear and sharp, betraying not even a hint of illness.

His phone rang again, this time flashing Jared’s name.

He glanced at the screen and answered.

“Hey, Theo? Where are you? Haven’t seen you around these past few days,” Jared’s hurried voice came through.

“Yeah, I haven’t been feeling too well. Did you need something?” Theodore leaned back in his chair, his posture languid and relaxed.

“No, nothing urgent. Are you sure you’re alright?” Like Cecilia, Jared probed carefully, searching for any sign that something was wrong.

Theodore played it cool, not missing a beat. “Been feeling awful these days, so out of it I haven’t even managed to take care of the wedding plans with Cici. Do me a favor, will you? Help me check out some wedding planners—Cici wants something unique, and I just don’t have the energy right now. But we can’t keep putting it off, or else the baby bump will start showing.”

“Yeah, yeah, don’t worry, I’ll take care of it,” Jared promised, sounding somewhat reassured. Still, he wasn’t completely convinced, and pressed on. “By the way, there’s another thing. A few of our outsourcing contracts are about to expire, but the companies want to keep working with us. I think it’s worth renewing—what do you think?”

“Sure. Let’s talk about it at the office tomorrow.”

“Alright, I’ll have them wait for you there,” Jared said, hanging up.

Theodore lingered with his phone for a moment, opening Jared’s profile. His background photo was still the same: the three of them—himself, Jared, and Hanley—shoulder to shoulder, all smiles. College classmates, brothers in arms, closer than family.
