POV: Seraphina
The ride up the glass elevator was utterly silent. The glittering lights of Argentis spread out below us like a carpet of fallen stars, but I saw none of it. The air inside the small, enclosed space was thick with the unsaid, charged with the lingering psychic residue of the confrontation in the lounge. Killian stood beside me, not touching, but his presence was a solid, grounding force against the chaotic thrumming in my own veins.
When we entered the sprawling presidential suite, the silence followed us, more imposing than any sound. Our legal team had already tactfully retired for the night, leaving the main living area empty and still. I walked past the plush sofas and modern art, my heels clicking softly on the polished marble floor. My body felt unnaturally stiff, a suit of armor I had donned for battle and now couldn't seem to remove.
I stopped at the floor-to-ceiling window, the same kind of window from which Damian had likely watched the city, planning his pathetic ambush. I stared out at the vibrant, oblivious life below, a city that had no idea it had just served as the backdrop for the final, bloody execution of a dead love. My reflection stared back, a pale, composed stranger. But my hands, hidden from view at my sides, were not so calm. My fingertips trembled with a violent, traitorous tremor. I curled them into a tight fist, my nails digging into my palm, forcing the shaking to stop.
Behind me, I heard the soft, almost silent sound of movement. Not the heavy, demanding footsteps of an Alpha, but the quiet, considerate steps of a man who understood the sanctity of a moment. I didn't turn.
A moment later, a glass of water appeared on the small marble table beside me. The glass was cool, beaded with condensation. Killian had placed it there without a word.
He didn't offer empty platitudes. He didn't ask if I was okay. He didn't say 'don't be sad' or 'you were right to do that'. He simply came to stand a respectful distance away, also looking out at the city.
