The journey back was a voyage through a grey, featureless hell. The sea, the sky, the boat beneath my feet—it was all one monotonous, colorless landscape. The curses of the Thorne clan had followed me out onto the water, and when they finally faded, they were replaced by a silence in my head that was even louder. It was the silence of a soul that had been scoured clean, leaving nothing behind. Not anger. Not grief. Just a vast, hollow emptiness.

When my yacht finally docked at the main port of the Blackwood territory, my lieutenants were waiting. I saw the look on Kael's face as I stepped onto the pier. He was expecting the broken, raging Alpha who had left. He was not prepared for the thing that had returned.

I walked past them without a word. My gait was steady, my face was blank. There was no life in my eyes. I was a corpse animated by sheer, biological necessity. The guards who had known me my entire life flinched as I passed, recoiling not from a threat of violence, but from the terrifying, unnatural void that now surrounded me. I was a walking plague of despair.

I did not go to my study. I did not go to the command center. My feet, guided by the last, dying ember of a purpose, carried me through the silent, terrified halls of my own manor, straight toward the lavish west wing. Straight toward Sylvie's suite.

She must have heard of my arrival. She was waiting for me, standing in the opulent sitting room she had redecorated in gold and cream. She had prepared a performance. She was dressed in a soft, welcoming blue, a gentle, concerned smile on her lips, her hands clasped before her. She was ready to play the part of the comforting, loving partner, ready to soothe the wounds of her defeated Alpha.

She opened her mouth to speak, to offer some sweet, poisonous platitude.
