It was late, too late to head back, so Gab and his crew spent the night at the Citadel.

Before turning in, Bruce came by to report the results of clearing out Giles’s territory.

“The Blackwater Syndicate’s people are all dead. But who knows if they’ll come for revenge?” Bert said coldly.

“Revenge?” Sean let out a derisive laugh, arrogance flashing in his eyes. “They can send every last man they’ve got, but none of them are leaving this place alive.”

Bruce added, “We left no survivors. That sends the message: whatever Tripe’s business was, it’s none of their concern. No matter what they wanted, it ends here.”

The group strategized deep into the night. When Gab finally stood, his voice was low and steady, carrying a weight the others couldn’t ignore.

“Sean, you’ll stay here at the Citadel. From now on, you’re in charge of everything that happens here.”

The moment he spoke, conversation ceased. The easy camaraderie of a moment ago vanished, replaced by a heavy silence—they all knew what Gab’s words meant.

Gab went on, “Bruce, you’ll take over Silver Valley. Bert, Hensuan is yours.”

All three had expected this day to come, but still, the moment felt too sudden.

After a long pause, Bruce finally spoke. “When are you leaving, Gab?”

“I’ll go once everything with Giles is settled,” Gab replied, lifting his head. “Triceratops and Giles are both dead. The Citadel’s under our control. I can step back now.”

The others lowered their heads, wanting to protest, but knowing better. Gab never changed his mind once it was made up.

Bruce was the first to break the silence. “Silver Valley only answers to you. Even if you leave, you’ll always be the one in charge.”

Gab gave a short, wry laugh. “I know I can’t bow out as easily as Alvis did, but with you all here, I’ve got nothing to worry about. Enough with the long faces—I’m not vanishing for good. Silver Valley’s still mine; I’m just letting you hold down the fort for a while. Run things the way you always have.”

Sean grinned. “That’s all we needed to hear.”
