You had to admit, Amy’s bold stunt had definitely piqued Fiona’s interest.
Fiona shot Jackson a text, hoping to ask him out for dinner, but he never responded.
Soon, the bell rang, and everyone rushed back to class. But the room felt emptier than before. A bunch of students had hurried to the nurse’s office—most of them probably had never seen anything so disturbing. No one was in the mood to settle down.
“Where did everyone go?” Ms. Brewer frowned from the front of the room.
Students these days, she thought, were nothing like her own generation. Now, some of them didn’t even bother to show up for required classes.
“This is about your credits! If you can’t even drag yourselves to an eight a.m. class, how are you going to handle anything in the real world? And don’t go around telling people you’re from Center College. Center College has never had students skipping required courses. Not once.”
She slammed the chalkboard eraser down on the podium, the sound cutting through the room. Her whole expression was thunderous.
This really was the worst class she’d ever had. No contest.
How did any of these kids even get into Center College? It was beyond her.
Back when she started teaching, her students were eager, polite, and always asking questions. They couldn’t wait to throw themselves into their studies—even when they didn’t have class, they’d stop by just to talk about problems.
But this group? Forget asking questions—they couldn’t even manage to show up and pay attention. It was the bare minimum, and even that was too much.
The more she thought about it, the more irritated she got.
“With something this serious, why are you only telling me now? Why didn’t you come to me right away?”
It was clear she hadn’t expected things to go this far. In all her years of teaching, she’d never seen anything like this. It was just unthinkable.
“You. Come with me.” She pointed at Patricia, her voice sharp with anger as she strode toward the door. “Unbelievable! If anything happens to Amy, you’re not getting off easy—and the school will be in trouble too.”
Patricia didn’t dare say a word. She pressed her lips together, head down, not even brave enough to meet Ms. Brewer’s eyes.
“You’re coming with me to Mr. Garcia’s office. This is serious. It won’t just go away.”
Ms. Brewer marched ahead, Patricia trailing after her, wishing more than anything that she could just run away from the mess she’d made.
