Chapter 30

Yes!Rowan shouted in frustration.

But the anger quickly fadedreplaced by a flood of tears.

She’s a bad mommy! She doesn’t want me anymore, does she? I didn’t even say I didn’t want her after I got a new mommyhow could she leave me like this? She’s mean! A bad woman!

Vincent knelt beside him, gently ruffling his hair.

It’s okay to be upset,he said quietly. But even when you’re angry, you shouldn’t speak that way about people.

But why

Rowan clung to his father, his small frame shaking with sobs.

Why doesn’t Mommy love me like she used to? Is it because I have a new mommy now? Does that mean Isolde Mommy has to leave me?

Vincent pulled him into his arms and sat down on the sofa, grabbing a few tissues to dry his tears.

Your IsoldeMommy is just busy right now,he said.

Even if you and DorisMommy are together again, Isolde will still care about you. Just like before.

Really?Rowan sniffled.

Daddy wouldn’t lie to you.

Rowan nodded slowly, the worst of his hurt soothed by his father’s reassurance.

Still, he missed her.

He didn’t have much appetite from the feverbut the soup Isolde made was warm, fragrant, and made him feel safe.

He wanted her to make soup for him every day.

DaddyI still miss IsoldeMommy.

Vincent thought for a moment.

Then finish your soup like a good boy, and I’ll take you to see her.

Rowan’s eyes lit up.

Okay!

Isolde had gone straight back to her studio after leaving the Moonlight Villa.

Her mother would be released from prison in three days.

The Lunar New Year was only a couple weeks away.

The new apartment was already fully furnished.

She’d scheduled housekeeping to clean tomorrow.

Chapter 30

There was one last restoration project to deliver before the holiday.

After that, she planned to take her mother to Sanya for the New Year.

But nowshe was pregnant.

Isolde rested a hand on her lower belly.

She hadn’t yet decided whether to keep the child.

What would Vincent do if he found out?

Would he care?

Would he treat this child the same way he treated Rowan?

She scoffed bitterly at her own thoughts.

Of course not.

Vincent only loved Rowan because he loved Doris.

It was always about Doris.

Isolde covered her face with both hands.

Stop it.

Stop dreaming like a fool.

Don’t humiliate yourself again.

Knock knock.

She wiped her face quickly.

Come in,she said.

Betty poked her head in.

IsoldeRowan’s here.

Isolde frowned.

He’s still sick. Why is he here?

Vincent dropped him off at the door. Told me to bring him in.

Before Betty could finish, Rowan walked in, hugging his cartoon backpack.

Mommy!

Isolde walked over and touched his forehead. Still warm.

Where’s your dad?

He’s working. He said he couldn’t take care of me. And I missed you

Rowan looked up at her with pitiful, watery eyes.

Chapter 30

Isolde picked up her phone and dialed Vincent,

No answer.

Again.

Still no answer.

She clenched the phone tight.

He was doing this on purpose.

Her expression grew cold.

Rowan noticed.

His face fell.

Mommy, are you mad at me?

If you don’t want me anymore, I’ll leave

Tears began to fall down his cheeks.

Isolde’s heart softened instantly.

No, baby. Of course not.

She pulled him into her arms. You’re still sick. I just didn’t know if I could take good care of you right now.

I’m not sick anymore.

Rowan grabbed her hand and pressed it to his forehead.

See? No fever. I promise I’ll be good and not bother you. Please let me stay

He pouted.

Isolde let out a long sigh.

She touched his warm cheek.

Did you drink the soup I made?

I did!Rowan grinned proudly. A whole big bowl!

Did you bring your medicine?

Yep!He patted his backpack. I also brought my toys and bedtime storybooks!

Isolde tapped his nose.

You never forget those books, do you? Alright. But go lie down now. You need rest. I still have work.

Okay!

Isolde worked latepast midnight.

When she returned to the studio’s rest area, Rowan was already asleep.
