Chapter 39

The bathroom door slammed shut with a loud bang, followed immediately by the sound of Isolde vomiting.

Rowan frowned and looked up at Vincent. Dad, why is Mommy throwing up so badly? Is she sick?

Vincent’s gaze darkened slightly. He gently ruffled Rowan’s hair. She might just be exhausted these past few days.

Thendoes that mean Mommy won’t come see me as often now?Rowan asked, clearly upset.

Vincent replied simply, You can ask her that yourself.

Rowan let out a soft sigh and mumbled under his breath, She didn’t used to be this busyI think ever since my other mom came back, she’s been super busy

The bathroom door opened.

Isolde stepped out, her appearance composed but clearly weary from the earlier nausea.

Both Vincent and Rowan turned to look at her.

Mommy,Rowan called, worry written all over his small face, are you okay?

Isolde felt significantly better after throwing upjust a bit drained. She nodded.

Vincent’s dark eyes fixed on her, pupils like ink. Stomach upset?

Isolde’s lashes fluttered as guilt flashed in her eyes.

She pressed her lips together, answering calmly.

Vincent rarely showed concern for her, so she didn’t believe this sudden worry was sincere. What she feared was that he might see through her.

Did you see a doctor?he pressed.

That question made her even more nervous.

Vincent had been a father before. Given how much he doted on Doris, he probably studied every detail of pregnancy when Doris was expecting

Rowan.

Isolde couldn’t guess what Vincent was thinking, and fearing she might say too much, she chose silence,

She avoided his gaze and walked to the opposite side of the bed, gently caressing Rowan’s little face. Mommy’s fine. Just ate something bad the last couple of days. I’ll be okay after taking some medicine.

Vincent raised an eyebrow slightly but didn’t pursue it further.

Then Mommy, make sure you take your medicine and get some rest, okay?Rowan held her hand tightly. Even though I really want you to visit me every day, you need to rest if you’re sick. I’ll be good, I promise.

Isolde was touched. Maybe she’d been overthinking it after all.

The child she’d poured her heart into for five years was still the same thoughtful, sweet boy.

Thank you, Rowan. Mommy will get lots of rest.

Knowing she wouldn’t be able to visit for a while, she couldn’t help feeling a bit anxious.

Rowan wrapped his arms around her. Then you work hard, Mommy. I’ll be goodand when you come back, you have to bring me a present

and make me lots of yummy food!

Isolde chuckled softly. Okay. Rowan is the best.

Rowan beamed. Mommy, you’re the best mommy in the whole world. I love you!

Warmth spread through Isolde’s chest as she stroked his hair.

Vincent stood off to the side, silently observing the heartfelt exchange between mother and child, his expression unreadable and his eyes calm, deep as a still lake.

After getting Rowan to sleep, Isolde glanced at the time.

It was already 11:30 a.m.

The district court would be closed by now.

She sighed and turned to Vincent. I’m heading out. Bring the divorce papers. Be at the district court at 2 sharp.

Vincent looked at her, voice cool and composed. I can’t make it this afternoon.
