Game Over No Second Chances novel Chapter 30

CHAPTER 030

SOFIA’S POV

People always assume that power is loud that it stomps into a room, demands attention, shouts down anyone in its way. But real power, I’ve learned, whispers. It wears perfume and silk dresses, and it smiles so sweetly no one sees the knife until it’s pressed to the skin.

I instinctively let out a small laugh at something Vee had just said over the phone, my hand rising to cover my mouth even though no one else was around to hear. It was a habit I’d picked up during my brief stay in Korea small gestures that made me look more refined, more delicate. People underestimated a woman who giggled behind her hand. I found it useful.

That’s the truth, girl,Vee continued, her voice crisp with amusement. They’re all wannabes. Always putting on some holy act for everyone, like they’ve got hearts of gold. The funny part is, it never gets them anywhere.

That’s why there’s no real place in this world for a goody twoshoes,I said, my tone casual but edgy. They always end up buried under the dirt. If you don’t fight for yourself, no one else will. And if you don’t make room for yourself, you get left behind.

Damn right,Vee agreed with a small snort. And speaking of fighting for yourselfHow’s the plan going? Has that little twat finally crawled back into Ethan’s house?

Not yet,I said, twirling a strand of hair around my finger as I glanced out the large window. The morning sun glinted off my expensive glass coffee table, and for a moment, the light reflected back at me, sharp and cold.

But she’s meant to come back today. Honestly, we already crossed the hardest part. Ethan agreed for Elena to return, and that’s what matters. You should have seen me, Veestaying up half the night, plotting how to get him to do exactly that. I had to twist it just right, so he’d think it was his own idea to call the same woman he threw out, and beg her to send their daughter back. Men are laughably predictable when you know which bruises to poke.

Girl, you’re good. I swear,Vee chuckled, a low, approving sound. Now that the brat is coming back, you can go full throttle. And the best part? You can do it any way you damn please.

My lips curved into a slow, thoughtful smile as I sat back against the velvet cushions. I was thinkingI paused, tapping my manicured nail against my bottom lip. Maybe I’ll slip into her room late at night and suffocate her while she’s sleeping. Painless for her. Quick for me. Neat and tidy, right?

What? Sofia, what the hell? That’s a horrible idea,Vee interrupted sharply, her voice losing its playful tone.

The sudden seriousness in her voice made me sit up straighter, curiosity piqued. Why do you say so? It sounds clean enough to me,

Come on, Sofie. You’re smarter than that. Think about it. With all the tech around these days

cameras, smart locks, baby monitors, hell, even door sensors they’d piece it together in a week. And even if you managed to avoid cameras, the police won’t just say, Oh, poor kid died in her sleepand move on. They’ll dig. They always dig, especially when the kid’s father has money and the mother is already in a messy split.

Vee was right, damn her. I hadn’t thought it through fully. In my mind, it seemed so simple. Elena asleep, my hand over her small mouth, the life gently fading from her eyes. No screaming, no mess. But reality wasn’t so

forgiving. And I knew better than anyone that sloppy work always, always came back to bite.

You’re right,I murmured, as my mind raced. A hint of relief washed over me that I’d bothered to call Vee before doing anything reckless. Good thing I decided to tell you first. Do you have any other idea in mind that would be lessimplicating?I asked, lowering my voice

On the other end, Vee let out a dry laugh. Oh Sofia, you know there’s always a cleaner way. We both know that if you want something like this done without anyone ever tracing it back to you, you don’t do it yourself. You hire someone. A professional who’s done it so many times it’s practically boring to him. He’ll make her disappear, then he’ll disappear too. Simple.

I leaned back on the leather armchair, staring at my reflection on the table. The woman staring back at me looked composed, perfectly groomed, not the type of woman who’d be planning a child’s death. And yet, here I

was.

And I’m guessing you know a guy?I asked, my tone casual, as if we were talking about dry cleaning instead of

murder.

Vee didn’t hesitate. Well, yes. Let’s just say my last boyfriend wasn’t exactly a prince. After months of him making my life hell, I decided that enough was enough. I hired this guy, and he handled it flawlessly. Not a whisper left behind. No messy evidence, no police suspect list. The cops poked around at first, but without a single lead, the case just got colder and colder until they filed it under unsolved. That’s exactly what’ll happen if you use him.

I drummed my nails lightly against the table, thinking. The sound echoed in the empty room. Okay,I said at last, feeling my heartbeat settle into a cold, determined rhythm. Send me his number so I can talk to him and come to a conclusion.
