Before Garland could voice the question in his mind, heavy footsteps echoed from outside the door.
Moments later, Marion came in. His clothes were covered in dirt, and his face was etched with exhaustion.
Debra rushed over, her concern evident. "What happened?"
"It's nothing," Marion replied, shaking his head.
"Nothing?" Randy interjected. "Look at yourself. And you've been out of contact all night."
Marion looked up and saw Barton coming down the stairs. "I got ambushed on my way back from the office."
"It must have taken quite a few people to stall you," Randy mused.
It was the first time Marion had been delayed for so long, without even a chance to answer his phone.
Marion's gaze remained fixed on Barton. "Four vans. About 100 men."
Randy gasped, "Crazy! Luckily, you managed to fight your way out of that."
Marion didn't respond, but Debra frowned. "They came after us not long ago, and the second wave came so fast. How did you get out of there?"
She wasn't surprised that Marion could handle a dozen people, but 100? That seemed impossible.
"I'm tired," Marion said quietly. "I'll explain upstairs."
"I'll help you up," Debra said, supporting him as they headed to the second floor.
"Hey, we'd like to hear it too," Randy called after them.
Debra looked at him and laughed coldly, "Quite the spirit."
Andrew looked up from the chessboard and smiled, "You look a bit worse than yesterday. Didn't sleep well?"
Debra scoffed, "Care to change your trick a bit?"
He had faked illness every time, and somehow, it had always worked.
Andrew raised a finger and smiled, "Heard of The Boy Who Cried Wolf?"
"Oh, are you telling me a story now?" Debra crossed her arms.
Andrew's smile didn't falter. "Once upon a time, there was a shepherd boy. He was bored while watching his sheep, so he decided to play a prank. He shouted, 'Wolf! Wolf!' The villagers dropped everything and rushed to help, only to find out the boy had lied. The second time, he played the same trick, and again, the villagers came running. This time, they were furious to be deceived. Finally, a real wolf came. The boy cried for help, louder than ever, but no one came. He and his sheep were left to the wolf."
