After the surprise had settled in, Olivia's eyes turned red. She gently cupped the paper figure in her palms and asked in a soft, hopeful voice, "C-Can you help me find Skylar?"
Truthfully, she was a little scared. She might have always acted brave on variety shows, but that was because Shannon and the others were always there.
Now she was all alone, and the fog around her felt wrong. So, it wasn't a surprise she'd be terrified.
Though the paper figure remained silent, it solemnly nodded and waved its hand, intending to reassure her.
But Olivia misunderstood the gesture and thought it wanted her to come closer. So, she brought it right up to her face and stared at it with wide eyes.
The paper figure grew a little awkward under her intense gaze and turned its head shyly. But sensing her fear, it turned back.
After a long moment, it took two steps forward and stood on tiptoe, reaching out its tiny arm. Its short arm gently and soothingly patted her cheek.
Though it was just a paper figure, Olivia could almost feel its warmth. Her fear and anxiety seemed to melt away, and at last, a faint smile appeared on her lips.
She pressed the paper figure to her chest and murmured, "Thank goodness you're here with me."
…
Racing through the mountain, Skylar's expression was taut with tension. As the words rang in his ears, his fingers at his side curled slightly.
As he pursed his lips, he said nothing and focused intensely on the location of his clone, rapidly closing the distance.
After a few more minutes of rapid movement, the supernatural energy in the fog intensified. As he neared the heart of the mountain, the presence in the fog grew thicker and clearer, carrying a strange familiarity.
Suddenly, a flash of realization struck him, and he finally recalled where the familiar presence originated from. Just then, a silhouette appeared in the fog ahead, overlapping with where his clone was located.
But she suddenly called out and stopped him warily, "Stay right there!"
Skylar halted mid-step. Just as he was feeling puzzled, she continued, "H-How do I know you're the real you?"
For some reason, Skylar's memory flashed back to when she'd been haunted by the shadow spirit and desperately sought out his help. When he'd rushed to her hotel door, she'd warily asked, "H-How are you going to prove you're not the ghost?"
Back then, even while sobbing, she'd had her guard up.
Just like ghosts that could mimic friends to lure their victims, the same logic applied to these fog-shrouded mountains. A demon might very well appear in the shape of someone familiar and approach on purpose.
Olivia had always been cautious, and that was what Skylar admired about her.
Though she now demanded he prove he was real, he wasn't upset. Instead, he began reciting a spell in a low, steady voice just like that day outside the hotel room.
