Upon a mountain about 30 miles away from Silverpeak Studios, Kai was zipping around, busy stepping up an isolation barrier that wrapped around the entire peak.
At least that way, it would keep the leaking dragon energy from messing with regular folks.
Once that was done, he huffed his way into the mountain. Following the trail of energy, he quickly found Cornelius, who had already shifted into his dragon form.
That sleek, cool blue dragon form wasn't foreign to Kai, but he still stopped and stared a bit every time out of pure awe.
Sure, his own silver-white dragon scales were great, but Cornelius' deep blue scales were stunning.
Except right now, Cornelius wasn't looking his best. His usually sharp form was clearly beaten up. That said, he didn't look half as bad as the other dragon in front of him.
A full-grown blue dragon, bigger than both Cornelius and Kai by a whole size, was currently getting his butt handed to him. He was scratched up, bruised all over… a pure mess.
Half of the dragon's scales had been torn out. His massive body was patchy, almost bald in places, and his spiritual power was in shambles.
Despite the sorry state he was in, he glared at Cornelius with a vicious, bloodthirsty look. Mixed in was rage, disbelief, and a burning reluctance to accept reality.
This was the mission Cornelius and Kai had taken on the day before—to capture a fugitive dragon who had escaped from the dragon clan grounds.
The fugitive dragon was no easy target. He was nearly a thousand years old, a full-grown adult dragon. Even injured as he was from fleeing the clan, taking him down wasn't guaranteed.
Not even with Cornelius and Kai teaming up.
Never mind the fact that the former had refused to let the latter fight with him. The second he laid eyes on the adult blue dragon, he insisted on taking him on alone.
Their target wasn't just any fugitive. He was the deadbeat father responsible for the tragedies that had haunted Cornelius and his mother for half their lives, Kaelith Drakemire.
He had thought that day wouldn't come so soon, but somehow, there they were.
Listening to two juvenile demons discussing how to deal with him, Kaelith flared with anger once again and roared at Cornelius, "I am your father! How dare you raise your claws against me!"
At the word "father", Cornelius' expression shifted. His eyes darkened with a murderous intent, and he approached Kaelith without so much as concealing his raging fury.
His voice came low and clear, but each word carried a heavy weight. "I, Cornelius Bloodbane, was born of the sky and raised by fate. I don't have a father or mother."
How could he, a deadbeat, be worthy of that title?
Kai scoffed from the side, folding his arms, and chided, "You, a father? After everything you've done? He could kill you right now, and not a soul would say he was wrong!"
He turned to Cornelius, supportive as ever, and encouraged, "Go on—handle it your way. I'm with you through the end!"
