The mountain had fog, while the water had its veins. Those who walked the old paths to find the dead were never without guidance.
Lexie led the way up ahead, steady and confident. The three of them pushed through the dense underbrush and shadowed woods.
After nearly two hours, a wide, open valley appeared before their eyes.
Felicia froze. Blankets of wildflowers covered the valley below. For a moment, she just stood there, stunned.
Then, her breath caught. This was it. The place she and Colton had been looking for during their so-called jungle adventure.
She had seen a photo online once, and she messaged the poster to ask for the location. Eventually, they made it a goal for their trip.
However, they never found it. They got lost in the deeper unknown instead.
Felicia's chest tightened with an ache. She looked away, refusing to let the memories of their promise flush in, and hoarsely told Lexie, "There's no path forward. We should turn around and find another way."
As she spoke, she instinctively took a step back, only to see Lexie and Mike halt at the same moment.
"Found it," Lexie said.
Felicia was caught off guard, barely understanding what Lexie meant. Then, the latter raised her hand and pointed at a spot where leaves and shadow intertwined.
"He's right there."
Felicia's mind went blank. Who did she mean by "he"?
She followed Lexie's line of sight, and through the tangled undergrowth, she saw a figure sitting there. Her pupils contracted sharply, and it hit her the next second.
She shoved past them both, her hiking pole slashing at the bush as she forced her way through. Then, she finally arrived behind him.
A wild, desperate joy filled her eyes as she finally confirmed it was the familiar silhouette she once knew.
"Colton!" Felicia shouted.
Felicia's flicker of hope shattered instantly at the sight of his corpse. She had already accepted his death long ago, but just moments before, she had almost convinced herself he had somehow come back to life.
How else could he have moved from the cave where they had left him to this place?
Or maybe he hadn't fully died back then. Maybe… After they abandoned him, he had somehow survived for a while longer, only to perish here again because he couldn't find his way out of the mountain.
The possibility of the latter terrified Felicia beyond words.
If that were true, how desperate must Colton have felt in those last moments? And if it were the case, he could've been rescued along with the group…
After days of fraying nerves and the weight of online rumors and suspicion, Felicia had been holding herself together by sheer will.
Now, finally confronted with the truth in front of her, she felt herself slipping toward collapse.
A frown lingered on Lexie's face. Without hesitation, she stepped forward, formed a mudra, and chanted, "Calm the mind, and I'll be at peace; may heart and mind align, and to tune the soul…"
