“Now, it’s come to this—Thaddeus has to choose: does he want the crown, or will he claw his way out of the pit of his own sins?”
Chasel fell silent for a moment, sighing softly. “But I think he’ll choose the crown. A man who’s stood at the very top can’t bear to fall all the way down again. Especially someone as proud and stubborn as he is.”
“The Abernathy Group… Thaddeus nearly gave his life to build it. I was his wife for three years. No one knows better than I do what he went through to get here.”
Evadne shook her head, frustration clouding her features. “Even if it costs him everything, he’ll never let go of the Abernathy Group.”
“Addiction isn’t something you can cure with a pill—willpower is the only thing that can pull you through. All I can do is help ease the pain. I’m sorry, Evadne.” Chasel’s voice was tight, edged with bitterness.
“Don’t say that, Chasel. You’ve done more than enough for Thaddeus—really, you have.”
Evadne blinked, eyes aching with unshed tears. “Oh, by the way—I went to see Uncle with Suri the other day. He asked me to pass along a message.”
“He… he wanted me to tell you he’s sorry.”
There was a long pause on the other end of the line.
“It’s all in the past. Except for how hard he tried to stop me from being with Cassius, honestly, I never hated him—not even for a moment, not as a child or an adult.”
Chasel took a deep breath, as if forcing herself to hold something back, then let out a laugh that sounded almost at peace. “But looking back, I probably should have listened to Dad. If I hadn’t gotten involved with Cassius back then, I think I’d be a lot happier now. So much happier.”
When the call ended, Evadne felt as if she’d been trampled by an army—utterly drained and desolate.
She could hear it in Chasel’s voice: she still hadn’t let go of Thaddeus.
But how were they supposed to mend a wound so deep it cut to the bone?
Just then, her phone buzzed, and a WhatsApp message flashed across the screen:
[Big Brother: Evadne, I’ve found where Chasel is. I’m flying to Country M tonight to find her.]
A heavy weight pressed on Evadne’s chest, but she replied with as much cheer as she could muster:
