Thea’s POV
Iris gasped in shock, but I just stared at them in confusion. “Who’s Graves? I heard
Sebastian mention him.”
“Graves is the king of the underground world, a crime boss. He’s the one who killed-‘
“Why would Sebastian be in contact with a criminal?” I interrupted, confused. This information had my eyes widening. Of all the things I’d thought about him and questioned, none came close to what Iris was telling me. A criminal? Seriously? This didn’t seem like the kind of person Sebastian would associate with.
“Because, one, he’s your friend…”

Before she could finish, I couldn’t help but interrupt again. “Why would I be friends with a
criminal who kidnapped me?” I almost shouted, but then remembered Phoenix. She was
trying her best to stay awake.
Iris glared at me. “As I was saying before you rudely interrupted me, Graves is Kane’s brother, which means he’s Phoenix’s uncle.”
As if things couldn’t get any worse, she had to drop the last bomb that left me speechless,
completely confused. I watched silently as Sophia stood up and placed Phoenix back in
her crib. She fell back asleep quickly.
“I thought Kane was adopted?” I asked, confused.
Sophia and Iris began telling me everything. It truly shocked me. Who would have thought that the man involved in killing the people who raised me was my daughter’s
uncle? No wonder people always said the world was small.
“So what happened with him? What did he want?” I asked Sophia, who seemed conflicted
about the whole situation herself.
“I think we’re mates. And he came to me because he wants to mark me,” she shrugged, saying something that shocked me yet again today.
“He wants to make it official, complete the mating ceremony. He says his wolf recognized

me from the first time he saw me. And his urge for me, both him and his wolf, is now very strong… I haven’t decided what to do yet.”
For my part, I had never experienced what came with all the implications or things associated with being a mate. I’d only been intimate with men I chose–actually two–so I really didn’t know what to tell her. Especially about wolf mate marking, that lifelong commitment. Iris seemed more experienced in this area.
Besides, didn’t he say he was doing something to clear his name? Maybe legal, maybe not, honestly I don’t care. He’s done a lot for Thea’s safety, Roman told me. So yes, if your wolf

Damn, I wanted to argue, but I couldn’t. Iris had a good point. I would never put my children in danger. I might be naive, but I’m not stupid. If I gave Graves a chance, it means that despite all the obstacles, I saw something in him worth trusting. I sighed, knowing Iris was right. I turned to Sophia, watching her think through the whole situation, weighing the pros and cons.
“So what are you going to do?” I murmured, waiting for her answer. She took her time, finally exhaling.
“This might be the worst mistake I’ve ever made, but I think I’ll take Iris’s advice. I’ll give us one night, and if it goes well, then I’ll consider accepting him. Plus, I think it would be a huge blow to my father.”
She paused, then continued. “He’s always resented me for not being a boy. Nothing I ever did was good enough for him, and in revenge, I did everything he disapproved of. Anything that would raise his blood pressure.”
Wow, seems like I wasn’t the only one with complicated family relationships. I was glad,
though, that it hadn’t broken her spirit.
“I never knew, Sophia. Why didn’t you ever say anything?” Iris held Sophia’s hand comfortingly, while I gently rubbed her back.
“It’s not something I wanted people to know… and besides, I’m trying to move forward and heal. Talking about it means remembering, and I don’t want to remember.”
We nodded in understanding. After all, wasn’t that what I was doing now? Trying to move forward and forget Sebastian’s past mistakes and coldness. I wanted a fresh start, not clouded by the shadows of the past.
“Anyway,” she broke the silence after a while and faced me. “How are things going with
Sebastian lately?”
I sighed. “We’re supposed to go on a date today, but I have nothing to wear.”
