Ruby stepped forward, her expression pleasant. She said, “Oh, so you are the one who holds the heart of that rising star in Colburn. I’ve heard plenty about you from my son. He says that you and your fiance are very much in love, and that you even have a pair of twins together. How fortunate!”

Lauren didn’t expect Ruby to chime in, let alone say something like that. She was confused. After all, shouldn’t Ruby absolutely despise her?

Nevertheless, she went along with it and said, “Oh, you flatter me. It all happened very naturally. We met, fell in love, got married, and had kids. It’s the whole deal.”

To the women in Draventh, Lauren was nothing but the mere fiancee of a new–money tycoon. They didn’t think that she was a big deal, and so, they couldn’t even be bothered to connect with her. However, since Priscilla had personally introduced Lauren and asked them to show her some care, they felt obligated to do this favor for Priscilla.

Someone said, “You’re a lucky woman, Mrs. Jamison. How old are your children now?”

Having children before getting married wasn’t rare. It was still acceptable as long as they were open

about it.

Lauren said, “They’re six now and will be starting elementary school.”

“Already? That’s lovely! It’s tiring enough to have to raise one child. I can imagine it’d be doubly exhausting to have to care for two.”

Lauren sighed while glancing at Rhea. She said, “It’s not too bad. Children have boundless energy, so you just need to spend more time with them. My kids are quite obedient, and they listen to everything I say. At least that’s one thing off my mind.”

One of the women was surprised. “Do you care for both of them yourself?”

Lauren didn’t even bat an eye as she nodded and lied through her teeth. “Of course. I’ll be honest with you. Things at home weren’t great when I had my kids. Still, I knew I had to care for the children as best as I could to ensure that Carter could focus on his career.

Rhea almost wanted to laugh as she listened to Lauren’s nonsense. She didn’t know whether it was out of exasperation or because she couldn’t believe how shameless the latter was. She didn’t know how Lauren could say these things.

“You’ve got to share your parenting secrets with us!” A woman who had gotten married not long ago scooted closer to Lauren.

Lauren said breezily, “There’s nothing much to share. All I can say is that children need to develop a resistance to things because their constitutions are relatively weak. Don’t deliberately stop them
