Carter’s words hit straight to the core of Lauren’s being.

She was truly afraid that he would continue to break promises and eventually leave her. That was why she tried so hard to assert her presence.

Lauren wore a puzzled expression as she asked, “What are you talking about, Carter?”

She sounded like the most innocent person in the world.

Carter snapped, “There were so many people there, and you had to go up to Rhea and say those things?”

Lauren crouched before him and said gently, “I just thought I’d been too neglectful yesterday. Since I ran into her, I wanted to apologize. Besides, many people are aware that we’re acquainted. If I left without greeting her, they’d think that we have no manners.

“You know how people in Draventh tend to look down on those from other cities. If we made any mistakes, I was afraid they might give you a hard time.”

She always seemed well–intentioned.

Annoyed, Carter tugged at his tie and signaled for a maid to help him back to the bedroom.

“I’ll do it.” Lauren volunteered.

He didn’t refuse.

Once inside, she fussed over him, helped him change clothes, and got the maid to bring warm water

for his footbath.

“It’s cold out. Soaking your legs will help with the injury.”

As Carter prepared to ease his legs into the water, Lauren suddenly kneeled on one knee.

Her pajamas slipped slightly at the neckline. From his angle, he caught a glimpse of her curves. He frowned and looked away.

Lauren held his foot. Her soft fingers gently brushed across the sole with slow, deliberate

movements.

Carter looked at her again and saw her hips lift as her body moved. Her lips curved in a faint smile, and she occasionally met his eyes.

Although Carter wasn’t a frivolous playboy, he had seen women in red–light establishments before.

At that moment, he inexplicably sensed a subtle sensuality in Lauren. Her waist moved rhythmically,
