The nurse shook her head. “We don’t know. We searched most of the hospital but didn’t see

her.”

Finn frowned in puzzlement.

Tess had brought Layla to the hospital herself. With how protective she was, how could she leave before her child even woke up?

His eyes dropped to Layla’s tiny hand.

Could Tess have figured out who did this and gone after them?

No. That wasn’t possible.

He steadied his gaze on Layla.

Nothing mattered more to Tess than Layla. With Layla still lying in the hospital bed, Tess would never walk away.

Finn’s heartbeat suddenly sped up. His chest felt tight, and a sharp pulse pounded at his temples.

“Zane!” His voice rang out sharp and cold.

Zane, waiting outside the door, stepped in at once.

“Send people to find Tess,” Finn ordered. The words were quick and clipped. Without meaning to, Finn pressed his palm against his chest. His heart was racing, thudding so hard it felt like it might burst through his ribs.

Something was very wrong.

Catching the grim look on Finn’s face, Zane acted quickly. He spun on his heel to set the search in motion.

The air inside the hospital room dropped to freezing. The nurse could barely breathe under the pressure.

“You can leave now.” Finn said, waving her off.

She nodded quickly, grateful to be excused, and hurried out.

Even with Finn’s striking looks, the icy atmosphere was too frightening to stay in.

Once the door shut, Finn turned back to the little girl.

Or rather, Layla, who had never taken her eyes off him.

Something stirred in his chest, a feeling he couldn’t even name. Slowly, he pulled out a chair and sat down beside the hospital bed.

Finn lowered his voice, worried he might sound too harsh. He asked, “Who did this to you?”

A man in a sharp suit questioning a baby looked almost ridiculous, but Finn’s eyes stayed serious.

He had heard Layla call out to her mother clearly. Maybe she could say a few other words too.

“Bad! Bad!”

Layla understood what he meant. She slapped her little hands, her face full of anger.

Finn frowned. “Bad?”

Jojo bad! Sis bad!”

Layla stammered.

The names “Jojo” and “Sis” echoed in Finn’s mind.

“Jojo” he didn’t recognize. But “Sis“? How could Layla have a sister?

He searched his memory but came up empty. Finally, he tucked the blanket snug around her. “Be good, Layla. D–Daddy will go find Mommy.”

The word “daddy” came out awkward, but the moment he said it, his chest filled with a strange, almost unsettling sense of contentment.

He touched the bridge of his nose, a little uneasy, then stood and pulled his coat back onto his shoulders. In an instant, he was once again the powerful CEO.
