lit up the moment she saw him. She stretched out her arms, asking for a hug.

That one word–Daddy–rang out clear and natural.

That sweet little voice melted Finn’s heart. He bent down and held her gently, careful not to squeeze too hard.

She was still weak.

When she let go, her small face puckered with disappointment.

Finn smiled faintly and brushed her hair with his hand.

“Mr. Lock, you’re so close with your daughter.”

The nurse observed from the side. She blurted it out without thinking.

The nurse instantly regretted it. She lowered her head, worried he might be offended.

It wasn’t her place to talk about his family.

But instead of anger, Finn’s lips curved into a rare smile. He seemed in a good mood.

“Mm,” he said calmly.

“You can leave us now. I’ll stay with her for a while.”

Relieved, the nurse nodded and quickly left the room.

Finn turned back to Layla, gently tucking her hair behind her ear. “Layla, do you remember who hurt you?”

His touch was soft, but his voice carried a cold edge.

If Layla pointed someone out, Finn looked ready to tear that person apart.

The hospital footage showed that the janitor was planted there to target Tess. That meant the attackers already knew Tess would come to the hospital, or worse, they were the ones who made Layla sick in the first place.

But something didn’t add up. The janitor’s car had led them to the abandoned auto shop where Tess was found, yet among all the people they arrested, the janitor himself was missing.

The fog of mystery only thickened. Finn decided to see if Layla could give him a clue.

“Jojo! S–sis!”

The little girl suddenly spoke, repeating the same words she had said before.

Finn’s brow furrowed.

He had only been taking a chance by asking. After all, Layla was just a baby.

But both times, she had given the exact same answer.

Could it mean something?

He sent Zane a message, telling him to investigate the names “Jojo” and “Sis.”

That question upset her. Layla scrunched up her face and pouted, looking upset.

Finn gently patted her shoulder, trying to comfort her.

His quiet, steady scent carried over her like a calm breeze; to his surprise, it worked. Layla relaxed and drifted into sleep.

The small teddy bear in her hand almost slipped, but Finn caught it quickly and set it aside.

He studied the simple little toy for a moment.

Layla seemed to love it.

He pulled his gaze away.

If Zane had been standing nearby, he would have been stunned.

In all his years working under Finn, he had never once seen him look this gentle.

Finn tucked the blanket snugly around Layla, then left the room on quiet steps.

But Steven didn’t even glance back. Tommy was forced to jog behind him. He muttered under his breath about how young people these days have no respect for their elders.

“Use the institute’s official account to announce we have lost the trial. Admit we infringed Finch Tech.”

“What?” the assistant blurted in shock.

“How could we lose? We didn’t steal anything! Why should we admit it?”

She bit her lip in frustration.

Steven shot her a sharp look. “You want my chair? Take it.”
