With the last of her strength, she threw herself at Finn’s feet, looking up at him with teary eyes. “Tess showed up at my house and beat me up for no reason. You have to get justice for me!”

Only then did Finn lower his eyes to look at her. “Let Zane take you to the hospital first.”

His voice was low and gentle, which made Nadine believe Finn was concerned about her. The fact that he kept such a firm grip on Tess only made Nadine more certain he was restraining Tess for her safety.

Nadine struggled to her feet. Her legs were so weak she could barely walk.

Zane hurried to arrange for a stretcher from the hospital.

As soon as they set the stretcher down in front of Nadine, the sight of all her bruises made the doctor jump in shock. They quickly lifted her onto the stretcher.

Kylie shot Tess a hard look, then hurried after Nadine, with Heidi close behind.

Zane took the hint and quietly closed the door, leaving only Tess and Finn in Nadine’s apartment.

“Come home with me.”

He repeated himself. But Tess simply let out a low chuckle, her mockery written all over her face.

“Home? And where exactly is home for me and Layla? Shouldn’t Mr. Lock be standing up for Nadine right now?”

She tossed aside the bloodstained whip, crossed her arms, and threw out those questions. After everything she’d been through, hardships had started to feel almost routine to her by now.

Finn saw her challenge as a protest against his decision, or maybe a last attempt to appeal to him. But before he could respond, Tess quickly switched topics. Her eyes gave nothing away, but something in them left Finn uneasy.

“Where’s Layla?”

“She’s at Evermount Villa. I’ll have the driver take you back.”

“Uncle Finn, I finally got some time off, so I thought I’d visit you. I never expected to find Layla all alone in the villa. How could you leave a little girl by herself?”

Abel shot Finn a pointed look.

Tess picked up on the underlying message, but she didn’t have the energy to deal with it. She strode over and took Layla into her arms.

As soon as Layla saw her, her cheerful giggles turned soft and gentle.

Finn felt a headache coming on at Abel’s appearance. “I need to discuss something with Tess. You should go home first.”

Abel didn’t leave like he was told. Instead, he stretched out on the couch. “What’s there to talk about? I’m finally free now. If something’s up, maybe I can help.”

He looked lazy with his eyes narrowed, but there was a sharp glint hidden within.

They never truly needed him in Kingsland. Even after searching for Tess all that time, he’d never been called back on the grounds of urgent company business.

He didn’t believe any story of a hidden agenda.

Abel dropped the resentment from his gaze and stared straight at Tess. “Tess, if you’re upset about anything, you can just tell me.”
