He dragged out the last word, leaving the rest unsaid, but the threat was obvious.

Tess finally reacted. She looked up at Henry, her eyes as cold as ice.

The middle–aged man standing in front of her was her biological father.

Since she could remember, he was always away, rarely home, and he had treated her with nothing but indifference.

Back then, she thought he was just a busy father, always working hard to give her and her mother a better life. That was why he seemed distant–at least, that’s what she told herself.

She made up excuses for him and lived with this understanding until Nadine came to their home.

She thought Nadine’s arrival wouldn’t change anything.

But she never imagined it would turn the whole household upside down.

Henry stopped going to social events and would come home on purpose to celebrate Nadine’s birthday and all holidays, bringing her the newest dolls and princess dresses.

Tess thought this change would also bring her some much–needed fatherly love, but she was

wrong.

Henry gave all his warmth to Nadine.

She was confused and hurt. She chased after her mother to ask why, but Kylie pushed her away in disgust and accused her of being jealous of Nadine.

Jealous? Tess froze. She didn’t understand.

Kylie acted as if she had discovered Tess’s shameful dark side, shaming and insulting her in front of Henry and saying she had a bad personality. But with Nadine, she went back to being a kind and caring mother.

It was as if Tess was a mistake, and Nadine was their precious one.

She should have realized a long time ago that some things weren’t meant for her and that she shouldn’t hope for them.
