Tess felt an inexplicable surge of irritation. “I’m hanging up!”

For once, Abel didn’t stop her. He simply let her cut the call in a fit of anger.

The heartless tone of the ended call rang in his car.

Abel lowered the phone, a smug satisfaction flickering in his eyes as he smiled.

His gaze fell back on the screen, which showed Tess’s photo.

If Tess ever saw it, she would be puzzled beyond words.

No one knew when that picture had been taken. She had still been so young back then.

Abel stared intently at that face he longed for day and night. The thought that he had finally found her filled his whole being with a deep sense of satisfaction.

His fingertips brushed the screen, then unconsciously lifted it to his lips, heavy with yearning.

The night deepened.

Before long, dawn came.

The moment Tess opened her door, she found Bessie standing there, “fully armed.” She clearly had waited for quite some time.

Tess’s mouth twitched. “Bessie, what on earth is this?”

“We’re going to the Embers. Of course, I need to be prepared.”

Bessie patted the sturdy helmet on her head, which gleamed faintly in the morning light.

Tess couldn’t help but laugh at her over–the–top precautions. She stepped forward and began taking each piece of gear off her.

Meeting Bessie’s puzzled look, Tess explained, “We’re going to collect what rightfully belongs to us, not robbing anyone.”

Bessie frowned. “Well, since your family is made up of such awful people, I have to be

cautious.”

Tess nodded quickly in agreement, though her hands never paused.

The Embers might act arrogant and domineering, but they were still a respected upper–class family. Bessie’s worries were clearly unnecessary.

“Hey, but didn’t you say that Nadine’s seriously ill? That her life’s in danger? So are they even staying there right now?”

Tess shared what she had learned the day before, which sent Bessie into peals of laughter. She bent over, clutching her stomach.

“It’s hilarious!”

She said between grins.

Outside, Tess’s taxi had already arrived. But someone Bessie didn’t expect was waiting inside.

Lyra lowered the car window. “Are you getting in, or not?”

Her face was as calm as ever, yet her light tone carried the familiarity of an old friend.

“We’re coming.”

The three of them headed straight for the Embers‘ villa in Aetheris.

Tess had assumed the Embers didn’t have a residence in Aetheris, but to her surprise, Henry had purchased property there long ago. Abel had told her that just last night.

On the ride, Tess casually asked Lyra about the final outcome of the case.

“Zack was fined five million,” Lyra replied smoothly. “And Finch Tech was forced to issue public apologies across multiple platforms to restore Nexus Research Institute’s reputation.

“On top of that, Nexus turned around and sued Zack for slander. Naturally, they won.”

A faint smile tugged at Lyra’s lips. She looked as graceful as a swan.

Tess found herself staring for a moment. “Looks like you’ve been doing well since going back.”
