The word “prison” made Tess’s hand pause, but Henry’s threat didn’t scare her. She only gave a cold, mocking laugh and pulled out a folded document.

It was her grandmother’s will.

“Grandma made it perfectly clear. All of her belongings were left to me. If you insist on hiding them, don’t blame me for taking legal action.”

“Legal action?”

Henry barked out a laugh, as if he’d just heard the world’s greatest joke.

He looked ridiculous with his collar still twisted in Bessie’s grip, but he still managed to pose like a lofty elder. “No matter how much we hate to admit it, you’re still one of us. That old hag’s belongings rightfully belong here! And you think you can use those scraps of skill you’ve picked up to pressure me?”

He snorted with contempt.

But Tess laughed too.

“Didn’t you want to cut ties with me? Now suddenly I’m your blood? I remember you also called me a ‘bastard child.‘ So tell me, if I’m a bastard, then what does that make you? A bastard too?”

Her eyes gleamed with mockery as she smirked scornfully.

Henry nearly choked on his own rage. His eyes rolled back, his chest heaved, and he almost fainted on the spot.

Nadine panicked, rushing to his side to help him breathe. Kylie, however, lost all pretense of her noblewoman’s grace. “Tess, you ungrateful brat! How did I ever give birth to a daughter like you? You’re no match for Nadine in anything, and on top of that, you’re vicious. You’ve always been jealous of her, and now you even want to drive your dad to his grave? I’ll sue you for attempted murder!”

Her glare cut into Tess, her eyes filled with loathing and regret.

Why didn’t I give birth to the sweet and obedient Nadine, but Tess?!

Tess’s fingertips trembled. She lifted her head and met Kylie’s gaze.

The room fell into silence. Kylie and the others stiffened, their expressions instantly sour.

Nadine finally noticed there was another woman with Tess.

Something inside Nadine snapped. Her eyes blazed with fury.

If not for Lyra siding with Tess, Zack wouldn’t have lost his case. She wouldn’t be mocked by colleagues and torn apart by strangers online. No matter how hard she tried to bury the rumors, people still accused her of lying about her credentials.

Lyra’s gaze swept across the room coldly, and she spoke up. “The will spells it out clearly. As the custodians, you are obligated to hand over everything to Tess since she has come to claim it. Otherwise, it’s illegal possession of property!”

Her tone was sharp and cold, echoing like a hammer blow.
