Tess didn’t answer right away.

She shut down her computer, then lifted her gaze to Abel. “Give up on Nadine?”

There was no surprise in her voice. She had expected this all along.

Since childhood, she knew Henry’s favoritism toward her wasn’t love–it was just a tool he flaunted in front of her. But she also knew one thing for certain. To a selfish, greedy man, an illegitimate daughter would always be the first sacrifice when profit was on the line.

“If you were Henry, what would you do with Kaleb next?” Tess asked quietly.

Abel met her eyes, then shook his head. His answer was firm. “I’d never be him.”

Tess sighed. “I mean, if.”

“There is no if.”

Abel pulled over a chair and sat down beside her. He leaned his arm on the desk, tilting his head toward her.

“Tess, you underestimate how stubborn I am when it comes to love. I’d never give up on the woman I love for money. I’d never let her suffer.”

His words were steady, almost like a promise.

Tess’s heart skipped a beat. For a second, it felt like the world around her had gone silent. Like someone had pressed pause on everything–except the pounding in her chest.

What is he doing?

That was the only thought flashing through her head.

“Be serious. I’m asking about business.” She snapped back to her senses, coughed lightly, and cut him off.

She turned her face away and tapped a document on the desk with her pale pink fingertips. “Henry controls 53% of Ember Group’s shares. I only have 40%.”

Abel noticed the sudden change of topic, and his excitement dropped right away. His shoulders even slumped. Still, this was Tess’s issue, so he forced himself to focus and leaned closer to read the file.

He rubbed his chin. “Henry cheating on his wife—that’s a fatal blow.”

Tess’s lips curved into a cold smile. “Exactly. Every bit of karma he deserves will catch up to him.”

Her chin lifted, and her eyes flashed with ice.

Two voices, dripping with intimacy, spilled from the phone speaker.

A slender hand with perfectly manicured fingers clenched the device so tightly the knuckles turned white.

Kylie’s face went pale.

She stared at the anonymous email. The blank avatar seemed to twist into a mocking grin.

Her chest tightened. A wave of disgust rolled over her.

Henry has been lying to me? And with my so–called best friend?

She thought back to when Henry and Nadine had comforted her not long ago. The memory now felt like a cruel joke.

So, everything I asked them then was true all along?

How could this be?

They had sworn over and over that Shannon was dead. She had believed them.

So Nadine … no. Nadine must have known Shannon was alive. That’s why she and Henry worked together to deceive me.

Kylie’s fingers trembled. Her chest burned with anger and shame, and for a moment, tears threatened to spill. But she swallowed them down.

She steadied herself and kept scrolling through the email.

There were more files. Large audio recordings. Over and over, she heard Shannon moaning Henry’s name in bed. The sound made Kylie’s skin crawl. And worse–sometimes Shannon deliberately brought up Kylie.

“Henry, who’s better? Me or her?”

“Shannon, how can you even compare yourself to her? Don’t bring her up. You kill the mood.”
