“I’ll be busy these next few days. There’s no need to waste your time on some party,” Nancy
said flatly.
“Alright, whatever you say. Just make sure you come home for dinner sometime,” Andrew replied with a genial smile. To an outsider, he would’ve looked like the perfect doting father.
Once Andrew and Regina were gone, Yvette slipped back into the room. “Nanette, I saw them leave. You good? Want to grab a bite?”
“Sure.”
Yvette looped her arm through Nancy’s. “By the way, Mr. Lawson showed up just in time today. Do you think Mr. Fuller was here, too? I heard he’s ridiculously good–looking.”
“Yeah… He’s pretty handsome.”
“Ugh, now you’ve got me curious!”
“Forget it,” Nancy added. “Men like Gideon should just be admired from a distance.”
“True. Some men are better admired than touched.” Yvette sighed in resignation.
Nancy nodded. She stepped outside and noticed the very man they were talking about just a short distance away, talking to Corey. Nancy’s heart skipped a beat.
Gideon was here.
As if on cue, Gideon turned his head, and their eyes met for an instant before a wall broke the
connection.
Nancy’s phone buzzed. It was a text from Gideon.
“Want to grab dinner?”
Nancy felt conflicted. He had someone he liked, yet he kept inviting her out. She wondered if he thought she was fair game just because she wasn’t chasing him like every other woman was.
That thought brought an odd twinge of irritation to her system. “I’ve already got plans.”
…
At the police station, Fergus and Raine were fined and kept overnight before finally being released.
Regina was there to pick them up with a face full of concern. “Oh, my poor Raine. And you too, Fergus. What happened to you both?”

They looked worn and haggard. It was the kind of look only a night in a cell could bring about.
Raine burst into tears and flung herself into Regina’s arms. “Mom, I thought I’d never see you again!”
“Don’t be silly! That would never happen.” Regina’s heart melted instantly.
Raine pulled back, tears still streaming down her face. “Mom, Nancy is just… so much better than me. I can’t compete with her. Maybe she should come back, and I’ll just leave!”
“Don’t say that,” Fergus said sharply before taking her hand affectionately. “You’re family. Nancy’s nothing but a scheming opportunist.”
Regina’s brow furrowed at the sight of them holding hands. She hadn’t thought much about how close they were, but now that they were grown, it didn’t sit quite right with her.
“But Nancy is the one who makes the family proud. I’ve been blacklisted from every piano competition. I’ll never make a name for myself now!” Raine said with a trembling voice.
