Chapter 9: Broken
Time seemed to freeze as I remained hidden in the dressing room. The humiliation was crushing.
I hadn’t felt this low since I was a teenager. I despise exposing my body, my flaws, especially in such a public way: in front of everyone. In front of him.
During high school, I swapped my usual shorts, t–shirts, and dresses for oversized clothes, hoodies, and baggy jeans. The goal was to hide my body, to hide what I was ashamed of.
I didn’t know most of the girls outside, let alone the ones in the store. Still, it was excruciating. Of course, Caroline had to make it worse by mocking and laughing at me, just like in high school.
Why was she so hostile to me? She never lent a helping hand and always seemed intent on making things harder for me. It made no sense.
But Ethan… I couldn’t shake the memory of his expression.
Why should I care what he thought of me? He had hurt me deeply, and here I was, in tears because of him. Because of me, because of this ridiculous dress that was so tight, even torn!. I couldn’t tell how long I had been in the dressing room, but I stayed there, crying.
At one point I felt like I couldn’t breathe, trapped in my absurd dress. Not only was it torn, but I felt something sharp poking at my waist, causing pain.
Additionally, I wanted to speak with one of the saleswomen to pay for the damage to the dress, it had been my fault. Mine and my curves‘, I shouldn’t have gone out in that stupid dress!
I looked around, hoping for help, but everyone seemed preoccupied with Lily and the other girls. The ones wearing decent, beautiful dresses, unlike me, who felt like a disaster.
Suddenly I heard familiar voices and realized it was Lily and Ethan talking nearby. Despite the pain in my heart, I couldn’t help but eavesdrop. Perhaps Lily or even Ethan could offer some help to get me out of this mess.
“She can’t go to your wedding,” Ethan’s voice echoed.
“What do you mean?” she asked.
“That dress… she shouldn’t be seen like that anymore,” he said, and I felt a knot in my stomach.
“For God’s sake, Sister! Haven’t you seen it? Do you really want all your guests to see her like that?” he replied angrily, and I couldn’t believe it. I was afraid he was going to mention the bullying from when we were teenagers.
“Enough. I don’t need to hear this,” I told myself, but Lily suddenly seemed upset, and I had never heard her like that before.
“Tell me the truth… What’s really bothering you?” she almost yells, but he didn’t answer.
I could hear the voices of other vendors interrupting them, and they fell silent as he took the opportunity to think.
“Tell me, Ethan…”
“I already told you,” he replied.
“I think what’s bothering you is that she’s a different woman now.”
“That’s not it,” he said, sounding annoyed.
“Is it the dress?” she asked curiously.
“I just don’t want anyone to see her like this…”
Is it because he was embarrassed that I was a guest of his family, looking like a circus freak? Good god!
“Like what? The dress can be fixed, of course, but…”

Chapter 9 Broken
“It exposed too much,” he said bluntly, and suddenly his sister burst out laughing.
“Enough, Lily… now he was really upset.
“Don’t tell me you’re worried about her showing her curves?”
“For God’s sake, sister… That dress was clinging to her, and her breasts…” he almost stuttered.
“She’s a woman with a lot to show! She has curves, Ethan…” she said.
“Believe me, I know…” he said hoarsely.
“Why the hell do you have to talk about my body?”
“I don’t want anyone to see her like that…” he explains.
“Then what do you want? Do you want her to be locked up in her house and never see anyone again? Especially… any man…” she asked, and he didn’t answer.
“The only way to move on, brother, is to move on, even if it sounds silly.”
“She definitely doesn’t want anything to do with me, not even to talk to me. I don’t know what happened,” he replied, looking really lost. “Doesn’t he remember what happened in the past?”
“You’ll have your chance, you’ll see. Mom and I will take care of this. You can go; I promise I’ll talk to Priscilla,” she said, hugging her brother.
I understand that this wedding is important, and that maybe rich people take the event very serious… but this is ridiculous!
Why don’t they just treat me like any other guest, or better yet, don’t invite me at all!
I shouldn’t accept all this. I had been so happy before I met him, my memories of the past were almost forgotten.
I’m walking back to the dressing room when I stumble over someone and see with horror that it’s him. Couldn’t there be any other person who could help me? How did he get here so fast?
“Are you okay, Priscilla?”
I’m fine… I’m just looking for someone…”
“Your dress is torn,” he says, “Come on, let me help you.” He takes my hand and leads me back to the dressing room, and I’m so shocked I don’t
react.
Okay, I just need to get out of here. If he helps me, well… so be it.
Of course, I didn’t expect him to be on his knees behind me, basically putting his hands on me.
“There’s a piece of fabric caught in the zipper,” he says, and I feel his hands on my skirt. I hold on to the piece of fabric as tightly as I can to
cover my ass.
I can’t help but feel embarrassed, thinking that maybe he doesn’t want to help me, or maybe he’d rather be with one of the girls who must be waiting for him outside.
Nevertheless, he stays there and tries to fix it, and when I finally feel the zipper give way, I feel relieved.
“What’s that?” he asks, getting up from the floor, and I’m afraid he’s referring to something on my body.
“It seems the dress had something that hurt you,” he says, inspecting my waist, and I want to die.
“These marks look painful. Are you okay?” he says, tracing the marks on my skin with his fingertips.
I feel a lump in my throat and I don’t even know what to say, I just wish he was far away.
“Let me help you… maybe if you take off the dress I can fix it,” he says and I panic.
