Daniel Campbell’s expression was still dark as he gave a cold laugh. “She’s got someone else in her heart. What am I even doing here?”
“Nonsense,” came the retort. “You’re the only one she’s ever cared about!”
“Maybe she did once,” Daniel replied, the icy edge in his voice melting into something weary and sad. “But not anymore.”
——
At the hospital, Amelia Turner recounted the events of the previous night with casual indifference as she picked at her lunch, tearing into a steaming meat-filled dumpling.
Across the table, Sophia Taylor tried to pick up her own dumpling, but it slipped and plopped right into her bowl, splashing broth. The next second, she launched into a tirade that could have made any mother proud for its sheer ferocity.
Amelia, having anticipated this reaction, calmly used her lunchbox lid as a shield against the barrage of crumbs and bits of meat Sophia sent flying.
When Sophia finally finished her rant, she summed it up with a huff. “Well, I’ll give him this—he’s got guts. Still doesn’t change the fact that Daniel’s a jerk.”
Amelia poked at her dumpling with her fork. “Samuel Wilson’s father holds a lot of power. Who knows what’ll happen, now that Daniel’s laid hands on him.”
Sophia shrugged. “So what if he did? You and Daniel are getting divorced, but the paperwork isn’t done yet. Technically, you’re still Mrs. Campbell. That scumbag Samuel got off easy with just a beating. What’s he going to do about it?”
Both women simply assumed Samuel had taken a few punches—maybe a broken arm or leg at most.
But by the afternoon, Sophia overheard some hospital gossip that left her eyes wide and her jaw practically on the floor.
“Amelia,” she said, her expression torn between admiration and resentment for Daniel, “Daniel really messed Samuel up. As in, permanently.”
Amelia looked up, startled. “…Are you sure?”
“Absolutely. No doubt about it.”
Amelia fell silent, feeling as if someone had tossed a strange mix of sugar and salt into the muddied waters of her heart. Everything tasted complicated.
As far as she was concerned, Samuel deserved whatever came his way. But given Samuel’s father’s status, Daniel really shouldn’t have gone that far—for his own sake.
She couldn’t tell if Daniel had just lost control or if he’d meant to do it from the start.
Thank God she was already at the hospital. She told Sophia she was heading downstairs for a walk and hurried straight to the gynecology department.
The results came back quickly. Fortunately, there was nothing to worry about—the doctor explained that some light pink discharge was normal in early pregnancy, and unless there was pain, she shouldn’t be concerned.
Amelia finally let herself breathe again.
Back in the orthopedics ward, she got a call from a nurse: she’d left behind one of her test results and needed to pick it up.
She glanced at her forms to see which one was missing, heading for the elevator—when suddenly, someone caught up to her from behind.
“Amelia…”
She jerked her head up, stuffing the test result back into her bag in a panic, but it was too late.
Charles Johnson, a doctor, only needed a split second to understand.
Amelia stood frozen for a moment before her shoulders slumped in resignation. “Got a moment? Let me buy you a cup of coffee.”
